Virat Kohli's twin centuries at Adelaide: A statistical look

Virat Kohli

While stand-in captain Virat Kohli’s 175-ball 141 wasn’t enough for the Indian team to register a victory in the just-concluded Test match against Australia at Adelaide, it helped him create, break and level a number of records in international cricket. Here is a look at 10 of the notable ones.

Virat Kohli, with his knocks of 115 and 141 in the two innings of this Test, has become only the second player to score twin centuries on his captaincy debut. The first player to do so was former Australian captain Greg Chappell, against West Indies at Brisbane in 1975.

Kohli is only the second Indian captain to hit two centuries in the same Test. The first was Sunil Gavaskar, against West Indies at Kolkata in 1978/79.

It has been 53 years now since an overseas batsman scored two centuries in the same Test in Australia. West Indies’ Rohan Kanhai was the last batsman to do so, way back in 1961.

The right-hander’s 256 runs in the match is the highest aggregate for an Indian player on his captaincy debut, beating Vijay Hazare’s 164 against England at Delhi in 1951.

The 26-year-old’s aggregate of 256 is also the second highest ever against Australia by a captain, after Saleem Malik's 270 representing Pakistan at Rawalpindi in 1994.

At 26 years and 38 days, Kohli is now the youngest Test captain ever to hit two centuries in the same match.

He is only the fourth Indian player to score two centuries in a single Test match, with the other three being Sunil Gavaskar (thrice), Rahul Dravid (twice) and Vijay Hazare (once).

The right-hander is the first visiting captain to hit two centuries against Australia in the same match.

Kohli is only the second Indian captain to score a century in the fourth innings of a Test, after Mohammad Azharuddin’s 106 at Adelaide in 1992.

Kohli’s 256 is also the highest number of runs scored by any player on his captaincy debut.
