Nathan Astle had the ability to win matches on his own for his team. The New Zealand opener made his mark on the 1996 World Cup in the first match itself.

The Kiwi star played a brilliant inning while other batsmen failed to stay with him for a long time. The century from Astle helped New Zealand to post a decent 239 runs on the board. Kiwi bowlers managed to restrict England below 230. Astle won the Man of the Match award for his match-winning knock. However, the Kiwi opener managed to score only 10 runs in the next five innings. New Zealand lost against Australia in quarterfinals at Chennai.

The co-hosts New Zealand and Australia took part in the first match of the tournament in 1192. The Kiwis did not have a good record in the World Cup before this edition of the World Cup. They were determined to do well on their home turf.

New Zealand's captain, Martin Crowe led from the front as he scored a brilliant century against arch-rivals Australia. This innings helped Kiwis to beat Australia by 37 runs. The Kiwi captain deservedly bagged the player of the match award for his performance. Crowe also won the Man of the Series for his whopping 456 runs in the tournament.
