What’s the story?
Former Indian international and skipper of the Delhi Daredevils franchise, Zaheer Khan revealed on Twitter that he has got engaged to actress Sagarika Ghatge. While neither of the two had publically spoken about the status of their relationship in the past, the cricketer confirmed what was a badly-kept secret with a candid post on the micro-blogging website.
Sagarika followed suit with a Tweet of her own moments later.
The background
Ever since Zaheer pulled on the Indian jersey as a fiery young pacer to the time he became the spearhead of the bowling attack, he has remained a heartthrob among the opposite gender. While most of his former teammates have settled down with their partners, Zaheer had continued to lead a bachelor, revealing little to the media about his love life.
The break up with rumoured girlfriend – another Bollywood actress in Isha Sharvani after an eight-year on-off relationship – did play a part in Zaheer postponing his plans of a marriage, but at the age of 38, the left-arm medium pacer has finally decided to tie the knot.
The heart of the matter
After rumours started surfacing about nine months ago about the budding romance, Zaheer and Sagarika began to be talked of as a serious couple when they were spotted together at Yuvraj Singh's wedding in December 2016.
Zaheer also made it to the screening of the movie ‘ Irada’ through which Sagarika was aiming at a comeback after breaking onto the scene with Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chak De! India in 2007 (Interestingly, the movie had a love angle where Sagarika’s character was in a relationship with a member of the Indian cricket team).
The stories of the link-up were further strengthened when the actress was spotted at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune on Tuesday, April 11 for the IPL fixture between Rising Pune Supergiants and Delhi Daredevils.
Despite constant questioning by the media, the duo has remained tight-lipped about their relationship. The actress did, however, claim that she was simply in a happy space at the moment. Following today’s revelation, we know exactly the reason behind it.
