The 10 Best Open World Games on PS4

Witcher 3
Witcher 3

This generation of Console has been all about the open world games.

Every other developer wants to make an open world game whether they have the experience or resources to make one, because why not?

That being said there have been some amazing, breathtaking and huge open world games on PS4 in this generation. Some of them from the studios you never would have expected before and if you have missed them, here are the ones you should definitely try (if you can manage the time)

#10 Dragon Age Inquisition

Bioware
Bioware

Dragons? Checked. A vast beautiful world? Checked. Interesting and diversified characters? Checked. Politically intertwined plot? Checked.

Dragon Age Inquisition has them all.

Developed by the critically acclaimed studio Bioware, Dragon Age Inquisition is an open world RPG running on the powerful Frost Bite 3 engine.

It tells the story of the "Herald of Andraste" a character you create and choose its gender and class at the beginning of the game just like in other Dragon Age games.

Dragon Age Inquisition has a world 4-5 times bigger than the world of its predecessors which you can explore on your feet or on a horseback.

Dragon Age: Inquisition received critical acclaim upon release, with many gaming publications naming it as their GOTY 2014.

It has a Metacritic score of 89/100

#9 Far Cry 5

Ubisoft
Ubisoft

Far Cry 5 continues the series over the top action formula.

It's not much of a departure from its previous two entries, but hey if it's not broken don't fix right?

What Far Cry 5 does excels in aside its excellent combat is the exploration and side missions in the game which feels far more organic and distinct when compared to the other Far Cry games.

Far Cry 5 has been nominated for Best Action game on The Game Awards 2019.

It has a Metacritic score of 81/100.

#8 Fallout 4

BGS
BGS

BGS's Fallout 4- a first-person shooter RPG is one of such games were I had the most fun.

Its huge post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland has a ton of secrets to discover, enemies to kill, weapons & armours to craft, and factions to side with.

It has the most addictive levelling system ever in a game, where every little action rewards you.

Moreover, if you are a fan of lego then you are going to have the most amazing time building and protecting your settlements in the game.

Fallout 4 won multiple GOTY awards in 2015.

It has a Metacritic score of 87/100.

#7 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Konami
Konami

Hideo Kojima's final game for Konami as well in the Metal Gear Solid series is a fan favourite. It's a tribute to this long-running series which finally comes to an end in a very unlikely way.

Nevertheless, MGS 5 has a vast open world to explore which sometimes can feel very plain and dull but Kojima's mastermind is seen in the game's huge number of mechanics and gameplay tools it provides you to get the job done.

It's the most user-friendly MGS game ever made if you know what I mean.

It has a Metacritic score of 93/100.

#6 Marvel's Spiderman

Insomniac Games
Insomniac Games

Marvel's Spiderman game is the Spiderman game we have all wanted since a very very long time, specifically since Spiderman 2 which released back in 2004.

As much as it focuses on Spiderman and his actions to save Newyork city from criminals, it also gives an equal amount of attention to Peter Parker's personal life story which has been delivered masterfully.

Its open world might be filled with a lot of filler contents outside the main missions, but Insomniac Game's take on the Spiderman is no doubt a blast to play and its portray of visually stunning Newyork is mesmerizing to say the very least.

It has a Metacritic score of 87/100.

#5 Horizon Zero Dawn

Guerilla Games
Guerilla Games

Horizon Zero Dawn is the most precious gem the PS4 has.

Developed by Guerilla Games, mostly known for the FPS Killzone series, Horizon Zero Dawn is a stunner. From its opening cutscene to the final battle in the game, Horizon Zero Dawn kept me awestruck and amazed by its jaw-dropping visuals and virtuous story.

Although mechanically it's open world ain't very different from the likes of Far Cry games, the game's overall concept and visualization are so unique and original that makes it a must play.

It has a Metacritic score of 89/100.

#4 Assassin's Creed Odyssey

Ubisoft
Ubisoft

Assassin's Creed Odyssey portray of ancient Greece is mystical.

It has probably one of the biggest open worlds to explore this generation and is an adventure that will take you about 100-150 hours to complete.

It's Storytelling- which is more of a personal family drama than the usual Assassin's and Templars conflict, and quest designs are one of the finest Ubisoft has ever made.

It offers a rich and addictive skill tree which let you choose your playstyle and the combat is much refined and better than the previous instalment in the series.

This is where Ubisoft is at its best and I can't wait to see where the series is going next.

It has a Metacritic score of 82/100.

#3 Grand Theft Auto V

Rockstar Games
Rockstar Games

I didn't sleep properly for days when I got GTA 5 for the first time back in 2013 on my PS3.

That is the effect this game has.

Its PS4 counterpart comes with the same package with better visuals and a first-person mode and of course, continuous new updates in GTA online which Rockstar Games continues to support even 4 years after the game's initial launch.

Even though GTA 5's storytelling falls flat when compared to GTA 4, its three main characters are the most interesting protagonist in a crime drama ever, especially Trevor Philips and keeps the story engaging till the end.

Where GTA 5 shines the most is its open world and random encounters you have throughout the game. Its portray of 21st century America is too good to be true.

It has a Metacritic score of 97/100.

#2 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD PROJEKT RED
CD PROJEKT RED

Witcher 3 is a benchmark in the open world RPG genre.

It didn't just snatch away Bethesda's and Bioware's crown elegantly, rather it ripped it off their heads and crushed it under its feet.

Witcher 3 is that good. It has a rich and dynamic world you'll get lost into, it has a cast of characters with personalities you'll fall in love with, it tells a very mature main story which I believe takes a bit longer time to finish then it actually should have, but overall it's side quests are such a beautiful and meaningful encounters in between that I never felt fatigued.

The Witcher 3 is a marvel of presentation, through its dynamic weather system, to its opening segment, to every character encounter and to every sleek and crunchy sword battle with enemies, Witcher 3 never lets you down.

Its world has a heart which will cling to you and never let go.

It has a Metacritic score of 92/100.

#1 Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar Games
Rockstar Games

RDR 1 is one of the best open world game of all time, the only thing that comes close to it surpassing and one way actually does is this game - RDR 2.

It took Rockstar games 8 years to make this game and the wait has definitely been worth it.

It tells the story of a group of outlaws at a time when the Wild West is almost dead.

It's huge and detailed world is almost too surreal to believe and trust me it takes a while to get used to.

It is probably the most realistic open world game ever made where you have to keep tab of even the slightest of things-which includes washing your clothes, growing your beard to stylise it or even brewing coffee at the camp to drink.

Add that to Rockstar game's finest storytelling to date with relatable characters and top-notch gameplay and you get the game of the generation.

It has a Metacritic score of 97/100.
