FIFA 17: Manchester United, Chelsea stars among most overrated Premier League players according to data

FIFA 18 is all set to hit the stands on 29th September and excitement is at a peak with EA Sports regularly updating their fans about the latest edition's stunning new features as well as player ratings which are extremely popular.

Until now, EA Sports have revealed the ratings of more than 40 players in the game with the cream of the crop yet to be unveiled. Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to receive top billing in FIFA 18, but before we could completely move on to the business of FIFA 18 ratings 22 days before its release, a FIFA fan on Reddit came up with a unique way of identifying the most overrated and underrated players in FIFA 17.

FIFA 17 released last year at about the same time and caused quite a stir, as is the case with all new FIFA labels. Player ratings in FIFA are always a bone of contention and a topic of debate, and Reddit user Iriss put out a list of players taking into account their FIFA 17 ratings and their WhoScored.com ratings from 2015-16, leaving out players rated lower than 70.

The results are pretty surprising as Manchester United star Juan Mata and Chelsea's indispensable Eden Hazard feature among the most overrated player in FIFA 17. While no one here is doubting Hazard or Mata's ability, the Reddit user has pointed out the flaw in FIFA's rating system. You can view the results here.

Fair enough, given Hazard had just come back from a disappointing 2015-16 season and to find himself rated 88 overall in FIFA 17 certainly enraged a few FIFA fans. Also featuring in the top 10 overrated players are Chelsea legend John Terry, Arsenal products Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs, and Manchester United flop Memphis Depay.

The list is headed by former Chelsea and Newcastle United striker Loic Remy, whose 81 rating in FIFA 17 barely reflected his actual performance on the pitch. Whether FIFA takes into account on-pitch performances or simply decide the ratings based on reputation has been questioned by this particular enthusiast.

FIFA's player rating calculation still remains a mystery but the intense debate that every new instalment kicks off can be avoided if EA Sports explain the method behind the ratings. At least, that is what is expected from the developers of world's biggest sports game franchise.
