The scanner in The Alters is an essential tool for locating the precise location of a resource deposit. Whether it’s metal, organic matter, or anything else, simply identifying the deposit area isn’t sufficient — you must pinpoint the actual concentrated source before establishing an outpost.

How to place and connect scanners

Once you’ve found a deposit — organic, metal, or whatever — bring up your tool wheel (LB on controller, Q on keyboard) and select the Scanner in The Alters. You must now place probes into the ground. It won’t work unless you create a closed shape, like a triangle (which needs at least three probes) or something bigger with up to six.

After the shape is set, a scan happens right away. You’ll see an underground map with lines running across it. If the lines are white, you're off track. As you get closer to the resource center, those lines turn redder.

If you’re unsure where to go next and have enough suit power, hold X to send out a directional pulse. It’ll guide you on where to move the scanners next, so you’re not just guessing. You don’t have unlimited probes, but you can collect them anytime by holding Y (or right-click on PC).

You can also scan overlapping sections. If any part of the new scan touches a previously checked area, only the new chunk gets scanned — no wasted effort.

When you've found the exact spot

Once your scan covers the actual center of the deposit, you’ll see a droplet icon and a large symbol marked on the ground. That’s your signal — you’ve found the right place. All your probes will return to your inventory on their own, and the game will give you the option to place an outpost right there.
