EA/Respawn's hit Battle Royale, Apex Legends, was announced in the last minute and nobody saw the new free-to-play Battle Royale coming. Reddit user hiticonic did though. According to this post from 11 months ago, the user had claimed it was a leaked minimap for a new Titanfall based Battle Royale.
The post never got any attention and the commenters on the thread claimed it to be fake. Well, it turns out, the minimap he revealed is exactly the same map used in Apex Legends, albeit with a slightly different orientation.
Amusingly enough, the post was dug up by Reddit user Fubbles22 much to the hysteria of everyone on the Apex Legend subreddit. Respawn developer Jayfresh commented on the thread and remembered how hiticonic would be the one laughing and saying "I told you so" a year after the game was released.
In this era of circulation of fake news, it can be hard to trust leaks. Leakers are not really the most trusted people because fake information can sometimes garner a lot of attention. There have been many leakers over many games who leaked information much to the scepticism of their communities.
People are impatient and they want information as soon as possible. Leaks are usually trusted if a big, anticipated project has been announced but not for unannounced projects such as Apex Legends during the time of that post. It's hiticonic's time to shine now!
Apex Legends has garnered a lot of popularity since its release. Even though it competes with bigger Battle Royales such as Fortnite or PUBG, Respawn has been successful in drawing a crowd of invested players and the game has also been surprisingly good.
It is too early to tell what the fate of Apex Legends is as they are yet to even release a Battle Pass or determine how their economy will work. If only someone could leak success rates from the future
