2013 F1 Team Preview: Scuderia Ferrari

F1 Testing in Barcelona - Day One

Ferrari, the embodiment of racing, is one of the oldest surviving F1 teams today. For a team which believes that finishing second is the same as losing, 2013 is a fresh opportunity to gun for the title after coming so close in the past few years.

The team management is made up of:

Pat Fry: Technical Director

Nikolas Tombazis: Chief Designer

Stefano Domenicali: Team Principal

Simone Resta: Deputy Technical Director

Corrado Lanzone: Head of production

The drivers for the team are Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa while Pedro De La Rosa is the development driver. Fernando Alonso is arguably the most complete driver on the current grid. He seems to be getting better with age like wine. Having already spearheaded two unsuccessful attempts at the title in previous three years, he won’t settle for anything else other than the drivers championship in the year 2013. Felipe Massa had a slow beginning last year, but by the end of the year had rediscovered his golden touch. He’s a proven number two driver who is more than capable of winning any race on his day.

Ferrari has named its 2013 challenger as the F138 in view of this being the last year V8 engines will be used in the sport. Unlike the 2012 car which was a mess, this car has a good base. Both Alonso and Massa have said that the car feels good and the team will be looking to test out the definitive aero package in the last pre season test at Barcelona. The F138 is an evolution of last year’s car. With the rules being the same, the team has looked to take the strong points from last year’s car forward while trying to strengthen out its weak points. Among the big teams, development wise Ferrari look to be the biggest gainer. The Red Bull car, RB9 is has almost reached its development cycle, since it has the same base as the RB9. Ferrari, which started afresh with its car last year have a lot to gain, especially in the exhaust region with the Coanda exhausts. One of Ferrari’s main weak points last year was its weak qualifying form. The ban on the free use of DRS should definitely help it’s cause. Also with stricter nose and wing test’s this year, rival teams like Mclaren and Red Bull will lose any advantage they had.

With 2013 being more or less a transition year before the big rules change in 2014, Ferrari is pulling out all the stops to ensure that it does not get left behind in 2014, while also being able to challenge for the title this year. Simone Resta has been appointed as the head of this year’s car development. Ferrari also has a separate team working on 2014′s car. Legendary F1 designer Rory Byrne who designed the championship winning cars of the Schumacher era has been hired to work on the 2014 car.

It’s rightly said that racing blood flows through the veins of all the team personnel of Ferrari and they are doing everything they can to propel Ferrari where they truly belong, which is the top of the championships.
