Adrian Newey's manager, Eddie Jordan, feels that one of the major reasons why the ace designer chose Aston Martin over Ferrari was the added responsibility and ownership that the role brought. Newey shocked everyone earlier in the season when he announced that he was leaving Red Bull. He had been part of the team for 19 years and had achieved a lot of success with the team as well.
Even at the time when Newey decided to call time on his stay at Red Bull, the team was still winning consistently and looked like it had a grip on the Constructors' title. It was during this period that Newey decided it was time to make a move and leave the team.
From that point onwards, multiple teams had been in contact with Newey and tried to lure him to their respective squads. The wizard was reported to have been in conversation with multiple teams but it ultimately came down to Aston Martin and Ferrari. The lure of the Italian brand and working with Lewis Hamilton was also there, which could not be ignored.
Reportedly, the one difference between the offers from the two teams was the fact that Aston Martin was willing to make Adrian Newey a shareholder of the project, while that is something that Ferrari was not willing to do. Talking about the decision on his podcast Formula for Success, Newey's manager, Eddie Jordan said that the major reason why the call was made was because of the overall responsibility and ownership. He said:
“Adrian Newey, well known by now that he will join Aston Martin from the beginning of March ’25. Now you might very well ask, why did he go to Aston Martin when there were so many other teams wanting his signature and looking for his future? Well, in my opinion, there’s a couple of very sensible and realistic reasons why."
He added:
“One of them was that the position, which is total control [and] responsibility, which he’s never really ever had before with other team principals and other shareholding people and partners, and this is what this offers. It offers him a shareholding, a position of total responsibility, of control, and a partnership with Lawrence Stroll and quite clearly that is very different to what has been happening before."
Adrian Newey had considered who out of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton he'd want to work with
Eddie Jordan also revealed that Adrian Newey had given a consideration to the fact that either of the options had Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, two drivers he had expressed interest in working with in the past. With that being said, Newey would eventually go with Aston Martin because of what the team was offering. Jordan said:
“There’s a couple of other reasons, the fact that he has yet to work with Lewis or Fernando was important, that he tried to see what would happen. Lewis going to Ferrari."
He added:
"Of course, we did have long discussions with Ferrari, but Aston Martin and Fernando was the one that came back to give what Adrian feels was, if you like, juice to his challenges but he wanted to see how he could get a team just like Red Bull, from the top five up to the top drawer.
Adrian Newey can only join Aston Martin by March 2025. There is still more than enough time left, however, for the ace designer to have an impact on the 2026 F1 car and make his mark.
