Formula 1 legend Fernando Alonso believes Charles Leclerc can end Mercedes' winning run.

The two-time world champion sees the new Ferrari recruit as a danger to the Mercedes team after the man from Monaco is being talked about as a future world champion in F1.

Leclerc agreed to join Scuderia Ferrari from Sauber in order to team up with four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

The 21 year old outscored his team mate, Marcus Ericsson, in his rookie season and helped the Swiss team finish in 8th place out of the ten teams in the constructors championship.

The promising signs are there, and Alonso is backing the young man to bring back the driver's championship success to Ferrari.

Alonso, a former Ferrari driver, said that he is looking forward to the impact Leclerc can bring to the championship since joining the prancing horse.

He told Corriere della Sera: "He is young, intelligent, and talented. I'm curious to see if the Mercedes cycle will end. I feel that the moment is near.

"I believe he has the combination of character and talent."

Asked what advice he would give to the Monegasque, Alonso highlighted three key points to bear in mind.

He explained: "Learn to score points [regularly], to help the team, and remember that the World Championship is decided between July and September.

"Don't be in a hurry, and keep the excitement and emotion under control."
