Bottas’s win boosts Williams' morale

Valtteri Bottas’s impressive performance in the Montreal race has given the Williams team the vote of confidence it so badly required.

“It has been a really good boost for morale. Really it has,” said deputy team principal Claire Williams in an interview with Autosport. “And I think that is really important when you work so hard and your team works so hard.

Bottas was lagging behind throughout the race, eventually finishing in the fourteenth position, but even then their superb performance in insidious wet conditions during the qualification rounds was helpful in boosting their dampened spirits.

“In Monaco we found a direction for the car and for moving it forward, but we need to make a bigger impression than that. And I really hoped that we were going to score a few points [in Canada].

Clair Williams believes that even though winning might off the table, there is still a pretty good feeling about the progress they are making.

“No one had any expectations that we were going to finish on the podium, but to finish in the points would have been good. But the car eats its tyres really quickly and then there are other issues that came together to make us finish where we finished.”

“Everyone knows that and everyone knows what they need to do. We cannot hide from our track results on a Sunday afternoon, so we need to keep pushing and keep fighting,” she added.
