A career in Formula One spanning twelve years, a driver’s Champion after spending 9 years in the sport, association with 5 teams and among a few of the veteran drivers on the current grid; Jenson Button is a more than familiar name in the Formula One paddock.

A driver who doesn’t have a very spectacular driving style like his former teammate Lewis Hamilton nor the charisma of Kimi Raikkonen, but what makes Button stand out from the rest is probably a combination of both talent and tenacity.

The 2009 World Driver’s Champion matured from a young driver who had landed a Formula One seat at a very young age into a more seasoned campaigner after toiling hard in different teams.

But being a veteran in the sport, has Jenson Button lost his hunger to fight for another Championship title or is it that he has been unfortunate not to get a good car to help him achieve it?

Let’s try and understand as to what could be the reason for a downward trend in his career and whether should he be satisfied with just one title or if he still has what it takes to win a second driver’s title.

A Champion – better late than never

While in his rookie year the British driver showed he was befittingly chosen by Frank Williams for a drive with an eight place finish, the years that followed saw his fortunes swing from the highs to the lows and vice-versa.

He moved to Benetton in 2001 and struggled throughout the season managing 2 points and finished at the back of the grid. Benetton transformed into Renault for 2002 and Button was on course for a better finish(seventh with fourteen points) beating his veteran teammate Jarno Trulli quite often.

Renault signed Fernando Alonso and Button was forced to switch to BAR for the 2003 season. Button showed his talent again and outperformed his world Champion teammate Jacque Villeneuve.

2004 was an amazing season for Button(getting a first podium and pole position) as he was among the top-three but without a win struggled to go beyond the third place.

By then he had stamped his authority and started to believe he could be among the top drivers and among the Championship contenders.

He scored his first win in his 113th Grand Prix in Hungary in 2006. However, the years that followed(specially 2007 and 2008) at BAR which subsequently transformed to Honda were quite forgettable as Honda had a difficult time in the sport before exiting at the end of the 2008 season.

But the 2009 season saw Button getting a dream run with Brawn GP(the team formed out after a buyout of the erstwhile Honda by Ross Brawn), a team that had lasted for one year in the sport. Button won a mind-boggling six races out of the seven races at the start of the year and finally saw his dreams turn into a reality taking the Championship title.

With 169 starts, Button made the second-highest number of race starts before becoming a World Champion behind Nigel Mansell with 176 starts.

Mclaren- A new hope

After a fairy-tale season, that saw him become a World Champion, Button moved to a historical team Mcalren, a move that perplexed the Formula One pundits and was criticized by many.

But Button believed in the British team and partnered countryman and 2008 drivers Champion Lewis Hamilton. While 2010 was decent as he finished 5th with his new team, 2011 saw him take the fight to Sebastian Vettel for the world title.

But a deadly combination of the crafty German and the flying Red-Bull saw Button slip to second place as Vettel dominated by winning an astonishing eleven out of the seventeen races.

The 2012 season saw his teammate Lewis Hamilton take the limelight as both drivers tried hard in the Mclaren. But both drivers faced issues as car speed and reliability turned out to be the bête noire. Though Button was able to salvage some lost momentum at the end of the season but that was a tad too late in the season.

The Big Question – Can he do it again?

As a driver Button wouldn’t want to stop with just one title in his living room and while there remains hardly any doubt that Button has the talent and the skills to become a World Champion again, what he needs is a reliable and fast cars.

33-year-old Button decided recently that he would be staying with Mclaren till the end of his career (most likely the 2015 season). Even though McLaren has had plenty of problems in the 2013 season and slumped to new lows but Button believes that the team will be able to fight in the 2014 season with the new regulations coming into effect.

Even though he has criticized McLaren for giving him a mediocre car, Button feels he is comfortable driving with a winning team like McLaren.

While another reason for his stay remains a chance to revive his ties with Japanese manufacturer Honda, who have signed a deal with McLaren as an engine supplier for 2015.

Button has quite a camaraderie with his former team and believes that Honda can help Mcalren revive the magic the duo had created with Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna in 1988 and 1989.

So even as age starts to get better of the Englishman, the desire to win another title still remains like any other driver on the grid. But will McLaren-Mercedes be able to give him the car to do it or will he have to switch to a new team to get a long awaited second title is what remains to be seen.
