F1 Monaco GP: One more controversy

Michael: In the line of fire.

Michael Schumacher found himself in the middle of another boiling controversy as he was penalized a precious 20 seconds for over taking rival driver Fernando Alonso while racing in Monaco Grand Prix and to top that a refusal of awarding any points after finishing 6th in the race.

Michael: In the line of fire.

It is being said that the reason behind handing over this penalty to the 7 time World Champion was that he over took Alonso’s car in the presence of the safety car. Mercedes teams argues that the car had just pulled into the pit lane, Schumacher and the team believed that they were free to race and overtake, but Alonso and Ferrari argued that this was wrong – they had to respect their positions to the finish line.

Schumacher over took Alonso’s car when the safety car had pulled out of the track on the final lap. However, the stewards felt that the move made by the Mercedes driver was a breach under Article 40.13 of the 2010 sporting Regulations. As the race was to finish under the influence safety car.

Due to this penalization Schumacher dropped to the 12th position without scoring any point. While all the other driver above the ranking of 12th moved up one place.

Alonso was found saying in the post race interview, “The race was very good and in the end I still have a good feeling. The team told me we couldn’t overtake -so when I saw Michael – I knew they would penalize him.”

While Schumacher had something rather different to share, “I think there is either this message, or there is the message ‘track clear’ and ‘safety car in’ and that was the message that was given to all of us — and when this message is out, it means track clear and back to racing. The cars were removed. There was no further need [for the safety car] so I took my opportunity.” Said the German, who was fairly surprised at being penalized.

However, the Monaco grand prix finished with Red Bull’s Mark Webber finishing in first place and team mate Sebastian Vettel took second place while Renault’s Robert Kubica finished third.
