Formula One: No new tyres for Silverstone - Pirelli

Tyre manufacturer Pirelli said Monday they will not be bringing new tyres to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on June 30.

Some teams had tried out the new specification tyres during free practice sessions in Montreal on Friday ahead of Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.

The current set of Pirelli tyres have come in for stern criticism from some teams, notably Red Bull, due to delamination, where the tread separates from the tyre.

But poor weather stopped teams spending much time testing the new tyres in Canada, hence the decision not to take them to the race in Britain.

Pirelli maintained that the current tyres are not dangerous as they remain inflated even after delamination, meaning the driver can comfortably get back to the pits to change them.

Instead of bringing the new specification tyres to Britain, Pirelli are planning to introduce a revised bonding procedure to the current tyres to help ensure the tread stays attached.
