British GP

The British Grand Prix currently hosted in the Silverstone circuit near Northamptonshire, England.

The British GP is one of the oldest races in the Formula One World Championship, it was also the opening race in the 1950 inaugural F1 season.


The 2018 British Grand Prix will be the 69th year in running and 52nd time that a World Championship round is held at Silverstone. The British GP and the Italian GP are the only two races that has been held every season since the beginning of the World Championship.


History

Brookland Ovals was constructed in the year 1907 near Surrey which was the first ever purpose built race track in England. Brookland was damaged and abandoned after the World War 2, British circuits were built on unused airfields and Silverstone was one of them. The first ever race at the venue was the Royal Automobile Club International Grand Prix held in 1948.


The first F1 race here in 1950 was won by Alpha-Romeo driver Farina. Ferrari's first ever Formula One victory was in 1951 by Jose Froilan at Silverstone.


The other venue's that hosted the British GP races are Aintree and Brands-Hatch.


The Teams

Scuderia Ferrari is the most successful team at the British Grand Prix with 15 wins over the years and the British team Mclaren has 14 wins to their credit and Williams have won it 10 times in the past.


The Drivers


The British drivers have been the most dominant at the British GP in the past with Jim Clark and Lewis Hamilton having won the race a record 5 times and also the French man Alain Prost joining the Brits with 5 wins.


The lap distance at Silverstone is 5.89 km and the total race consists of 52 laps. Lewis Hamilton holds the record for the fastest lap with a time of 1:30.621.


The 2017 race was won by Lewis Hamilton starting from pole, leading every lap of the race and also setting the fastest lap in the course. The Finns Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen finished second and third respectively.
