McLaren have been struggling this season and their performance so far has been below par. However, team principal Martin Whitmarsh feels that the team is making progress.

The Woking based team managed to secure valuable points in Nurburgring with Jenson Button and Sergi Perez securing P6 and P8 respectively. The result in Germany was certainly an improvement from the previous races in Silverstone and Montreal where they failed to pick up points. They have not been able to sort out the tyre problems but the new Pirelli tyres which use Kevlar belts instead of steel seem to be working well for the team.

However, Whitmarsh cautioned that there’s a lot left to be done. “We are still not where we expect to be or want to be, but at least it was a step in the right direction. After a record 64 races in the points, to then go the following two races without points was a bit of a sharpener to the mind” he said.

The McLaren principal also stated that the team is more focused on doing a better job next season. “For us, there are no secrets here, we have to continue to try to develop the car, understand it. We’ve made a little bit of progress, but frankly not as much as we would like. We’ve a limited amount of resource on it because we are very much focused on next year. But as racers we won’t give up. We’ll be racing hard and trying to make a bit more progress the rest of this year” Whitmarsh added.
