Lance Stroll suffered a crash during the second free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix, which triggered a wave of reactions from fans. The 26-year-old saw his FP2 session at his home race come to an abrupt end less than 10 minutes after it began.
The Aston Martin driver, who was making a return to the paddock after missing the Spanish Grand Prix due to a reportedly recurring injury to his right wrist, saw his return unfold in a manner far from he would have envisioned. The Canadian, who was aiming to set a lap time around the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, made contact with the wall at Turn 9. While the contact initially appeared minimal, it subsequently caused substantial damage to his front left.
The incident ruled Stroll out for the remainder of the session, prompting fans to share their reactions on X (formerly Twitter), with many aiming jabs at the Canadian.
One fan, seemingly taking a dig at the 26-year-old, commented:
“Lance Stroll doing Lance Stroll things.”
Another fan chimed in cheekily:
“Another GP, another car screwed for Lance…”
A third fan aimed a more pointed jab at Stroll, writing:
“Lance Stroll masterclass right in front of his home crowd.”
One fan, clearly frustrated with the Aston Martin driver’s performance, added:
“Bad driver. Would have gone the way of Nick De Vries a long time ago if not for Daddy.”
Stroll’s crash marked the second major incident of the Canadian Grand Prix free practice sessions so far. His crash followed Charles Leclerc’s, who slammed his Scuderia Ferrari into the wall ahead of Turn 3 during the first practice session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Lance Stroll speaks on his injury during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend
Lance Stroll previously spoke about his wrist injury during the Canadian Grand Prix media day. The 26-year-old required surgery to resolve a recurring issue with his right wrist, which he had sustained from a bicycle incident in 2023.
The Aston Martin driver was forced to miss the Spanish Grand Prix despite participating in qualifying for the main race. However, Stroll recovered in time to participate in his home race. Sharing his thoughts with the media about what transpired during the Barcelona race event, he stated:
“I started to feel some pain in my wrist and hand a couple of months ago, but I wanted to keep racing,” Lance Stroll said, speaking with Formula 1’s official website.
“However, the discomfort just became too much, and we made the decision to have medical intervention. Naturally, I was disappointed to miss the race in Barcelona but it was the right call at the time, and I'm looking forward to getting back to racing this weekend… [The wrist’s] feeling good.”
To ensure he was up to speed ahead of his home race, Stroll drove in a private test at Circuit Paul Ricard in France ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend. The Montreal native will now be aiming to recover from his crash and record positive results through the remainder of the race weekend.
