Lando Norris' driving style has been compared to former F1 legend Jenson Button for the manner in which the McLaren driver tends to have a smooth throttle application. Norris has been an impressive addition to the Woking-based squad. The driver stepped into the team in 2019 and since then, he has been leveling up one season after the other.

The 2020 F1 season saw him secure his first podium, the 2021 season saw him secure his first pole position and even though the win eludes him right now, the performances have certainly been on the upswing. Peter Windsor talked about how Lando Norris' driving style had similarities with Jenson Button who was very smooth in terms of throttle application.

Talking about this on his YouTube channel, Windsor said,

“Jenson was a very similar driver to Lando, I think. I’m not sure Lando is as good as Jenson was, in terms of throttle application, power application. Jenson was so good in that area. I think it’s difficult for anybody, apart from Perez, really to put their hand up and say that."

He added,

“But I think, in other ways, he was quite similar to Lando, the way Lando drives, and very, very rarely did you see Jenson with any sort of spike in his inputs or with a car appreciably out of line, just really good. Just great feel, fingertip touch in the wet because he was so supple and soft in the way he drove and the right foot and the brilliant foot coordination he had, still has probably!”

Lando Norris cautioned to find a balance in his self-critical approach

Lando Norris has been cautioned by McLaren team principal Andrea Stella to find a more balanced approach when it comes to his self-critical nature. The driver was very hard on himself when he made a mistake during the F1 Qatar GP over the weekend.

Stella has cautioned Norris on being too harsh on himself in a manner that it becomes counterproductive. He said:

“He doesn’t want to look arrogant, he doesn’t want to look like: ‘I’m not acknowledging that I could have done better, so I make it very clear.' But at the same time, like I said before about champions, you need to find the right balance, and you need to find the right dynamics in terms of communication to the world and in terms of communication to yourself, to put yourself in the position to perform today, and in the position to keep improving every day."

Lando Norris has now jumped ahead of George Russell in the championship standings and will look to continue this march forward after a double podium in Qatar.
