FIA steward and former racer Derek Warwick suspects Lewis Hamilton is already thinking of retiring from F1 amidst mounting pressure at Ferrari. The 7x champion shocked the world last season when he announced that he was leaving Mercedes for the Italian team.

This also meant that the most successful driver in F1 history was going to be paired with the most successful team in the sport. The partnership, however, has not begun on the most positive note. Lewis Hamilton has not been close enough to Charles Leclerc to make it even remotely competitive.

In the first 10 events, we cannot pick even a single race weekend where Lewis Hamilton was definitively the faster of the two Ferrari drivers. As a result, the pressure has continued to mount as the gap continues to get bigger in terms of points.

Talking about the Brit's situation at Ferrari, Derek Warwick suspected that Lewis Hamilton might already be thinking of retiring. He told Plejmo,

“The most important thing on the car is probably the steering wheel because there are so many different adjustments you can do to the steering wheel, maybe he hasn't quite got on top of that."

He added,

"Do I want Lewis to win races and challenge for the world championship? Yes. I think he deserves it. I think he deserves that eighth world title. It’s not going to happen this year, and I think if it carries on the way it is at the minute, I suspect he's already thinking of stopping.”

Warwick on Lewis Hamilton's struggles

The FIA steward, who could be in Canada in an official capacity, also wondered why Lewis Hamilton has been unable to get going in a Ferrari. The driver has moved teams after 12 years with Mercedes, and changing everything has been tough for the driver. Suspecting that people are underestimating how hard it is to shift teams, Warwick said,

“I don’t know why Lewis Hamilton can’t get going in a Ferrari. I think that's an enigma really. I think we all saw him moving to Ferrari as a great opportunity to win his eighth world title. The car is not to his liking at the minute. Most critics will say he’s a seven-time world champion, 105 grand prix wins, surely you adapt to the car you've got, because Charles has."

He added,

“But for some reason he can't get used to it. I think people underestimate, including Lewis, maybe how difficult it is to join a new team. How to get used to their systems, their debriefs, getting them to understand what you want and vice versa.”

Hamilton has not had many high points at Ferrari this season. The driver would be hoping to put together a better run this weekend as pressure starts mounting.
