Sergio Perez has lashed out at the social media toxicity that followed his collision with Carlos Sainz at the F1 Azerbaijan GP. The two drivers were involved in a crash as they battled for the podium position. The incident took place when Carlos got the jump on Sergio into turn 2. For the subsequent turn 3, the Red Bull driver was trying to line up the Ferrari driver for a move with the help of DRS.

However, both drivers slightly misjudged the proximity to each other. They ended up colliding in what was a serious incident. The FIA stewards ruled the collision a racing incident and hence neither of the two drivers got any penalty.

Perez, however, got the bulk of the blame from different quarters, so the RB driver even opened up on the toxic social media blame culture that followed him in the aftermath. A clip was floated on social media where Perez was seen patting Sainz's head while the Spaniard was still in his crashed Ferrari.

Talking to the media, including RacingNews365, Perez thrashed the social media toxicity where people, without complete truth, make extreme comments. He said:

"I have to say that the social media sometimes can be very toxic in that regard. So it's, it's best to stay away, because most of the time people don't know exactly the truth, and the truth is that we both were extremely disappointed. [It's] nothing like I hit his head, or some of the comments that I've seen. I have nothing to say about it."

He added,

"Carlos knows exactly and actually we walked together after back to the paddock, and we were just both super disappointed with ourselves after such a race, what we both did, we finished our weekend like that."

Sergio Perez clarifies what happened with Carlos Sainz in Baku

Sergio Perez clarified what happened with Sainz in Baku, revealing that he was talking to the Spaniard while looking down. The Mexican further said that he didn't push Carlos, and the videos on social media make it look worse than it was. He said:

"I was chatting to Carlos as he was looking down. I was telling him I was talking to him, I didn't push him. It looks worse on the video than it is. Carlos is one of my best mates in the drivers' group, so the last person that I would have liked to come together with is Carlos. We've turned the page and hopefully both of us can have a tremendous race [in Singapore]."

Sergio Perez showed impressive form in Baku and was in contention for the win for some time as well. The driver was understandably upset when the entire weekend ended with a crash, and hence he had nothing to show for it.
