The Venezuelan driver ran in 11th place for much of the race before Rosberg retired due to an engine failure, promoting the Williams driver into 10th.

The elated Colombian said: “I had a really good start from P15 and made a few overtaking manoeuvres during the race which were on the limit, which is especially pleasing as at this track since it is very hard to overtake. The car felt consistent, maybe not as fast in the second and third stints, but very consistent.”

Williams chief race engineer Xevi Pujolar believes first points of the season acts as a big motivation to the team as they enter the long summer break.

“Our first point gives us a good motivation going into the summer break to come back even stronger for the remaining races of the season.”

After scoring their first victory in eight years in 2012, Williams had a poor start to their 2013 campaign, failing to score in first eight races of the season and being consistently behind other midfielder constructors in terms of raw pace .
