'Sergio Perez under scrutiny' - McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh

Sergio Perez of McLaren

Mexican driver Sergio Perez was warned by the McLaren team boss Martin Whitmarsh who said that Perez is “under scrutiny” from fellow drivers.

Perez was given a drive-through penalty during Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix after he forced Romain Grosjean from Lotus off the track.

The Mexican’s driving was criticized earlier in the season after Kimi Raikkonen as well as Fernando Alonso slammed him.

“When you’re under scrutiny, you’ve got to watch it. Inevitably, what drivers do when a young charger comes up, is that in drivers’ briefings the experienced guys do try to gang up and create an environment where they are under some scrutiny. I’ve seen that many times. One day Sergio will be one of those drivers,” said Whitmarsh to BBC sport.

McLaren team-mate Jenson Button had also accused Perez earlier this season for “dirty driving, and now the McLaren chief believes that he “needs to watch it”.

“You can see he is looking over at the corner ahead of him. It’s not deliberate but when you’re in his position you’ve got to be careful. When you’re under a bit of scrutiny you’ve got to watch it,” added Whitmarsh.
