Ever since Eddie Jordan speculated that Lewis Hamilton has confirmed a deal with Mercedes, Hamilton’s future since then has been the main topic of discussion. After the Italian grand Prix, Hamilton didn’t look happy with the Mclaren team and this has added fire to the speculation of Hamilton moving to Mercedes. So let’s see why Hamilton can and cannot move to Mercedes.Why Hamilton can move to Mercedes?
It has to be remembered that Mclaren isn’t a manufacturer team, and doesn’t have a brand presence like the Mercedes. And this is the reason why Hamilton’s management company XIX entertainment are eager to get him to Mercedes as then they will be able to fully cash in on Hamilton’s status, box office power and his image rights.
Fernando Alonso, Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen are big earners in Formula 1 and Hamilton’s management company would like to get Hamilton’s name in the top earner’s list.
In the Italian grand prix Press Conference, this question was put forward by Sky Sport’s David Croft and here is what Hamilton had to say:
Q: (David Croft – Sky Sports) Lewis, when you look at a contract or renegotiation or look to move, at your stage of your career, what is it you are looking at? Is it purely money or are there other factors?
LH: I want to win.
Q: (David Croft – Sky Sports) Pure and simple you want to win.LH: Yes.
Now, this answer makes the whole picture look much more complicated as Hamilton’s management company is interested in signing a contract which will bring huge sums of money while Hamilton is interested in having a car that can win him races. So, this brings us to our next question – Why Hamilton can’t go to Mercedes?
Why Hamilton can’t go to Mercedes?
Mercedes are in their third year of Formula 1 World championship and have recorded just 1 win from 51 races and it doesn’t look like they will be challenging for world championship title next year.
Secondly, at the moment, Mclaren have the fastest car and if Hamilton wants to win races ‘pure and simple’, he would definitely like to stick with the Mclaren team than to move to Mercedes, who are struggling to achieve consistency.
Another interesting point is that, it doesn’t look like Michael Schumacher is going to retire. Eddie Jordan and David Coulthard do think that Schumacher will retire but that’s not what the signs are indicating at the moment.
Michael was present at the Young driver’s test in Magny Cours to see how the new updates work on his Mercedes.
Now why would a driver who is retiring at the end of this year would be so interested to see how the new upgrade package works? He would have come to know how upgrades work in Singapore. So, the interest Michael is taking in the development of Mercedes clearly indicates that he is here to stay for the next year.
