January 19th, 2020 marked the 1000th day that Liverpool have stayed unbeaten at Anfield. In that time, Jurgen Klopp's side have turned Anfield into an impenetrable fortress which every team dreads visiting. The Reds' last defeat at Anfield came in April of 2017 in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace with Christian Benteke among the goal scorers.
However, since then the Anfield faithful have seen some iconic moments in both the Premier League and the Champions League. This includes the famous night against Barcelona in which Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum wrote themsleves into the Liverpool folklore with a brace to seal the comeback of all comebacks. Although this game stands out as one of the best, there has been plenty more memorable games for Liverpool during their 1000 day unbeaten run.
During this period, Liverpool have won 2 Champions League semi-finals against Roma and Barcelona. Adding to this, it hasn't just been Barcelona who have failed to win at Anfield during this period but also the likes of PSG. The German champions, Bayern Munich, have also failed to secure victory at Anfield along with the Portuguese champions, Porto who have failed to win at Anfield.
Even Manchester City who dominated English football in the last 2 seasons, could not taste victory at Anfield in the last 1000 days. This highlights just how good Liverpool have been at home since 2017 with no team being able to overcome and defeat the Liverpool fortress of Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp will look to set new records at Anfield and go unbeaten for as long as possible as they look to win their first-ever Premier League title this season. Anfield has already played a key part in important victories. Klopp will be fully focused on the next game as his side go head to head with Manchester United, the only team Liverpool have failed to beat this season.
With that said, we will take a look at 5 of the most memorable wins for Liverpool at Anfield in those 1000 days.
#1 Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City, Premier League 14/01/18
With the arrival of the unbeaten table-toppers to Anfield, many predicted a Liverpool loss at the hands of a Manchester City side who were looking unstoppable. However, the power of Anfield prevailed once again and not for the first time in his illustrious career, Guardiola was defeated by Jurgen Klopp.
The game started with the Anfield faithful fully behind their team, producing a deafening atmosphere that played a key factor in Liverpool's stunning attacking performance. The first goal of the game came from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain who struck from distance to drive the ball into the bottom corner to give Liverpool the lead inside the opening 10 minutes.
Liverpool knew they had to stay compact in order to prevent a Manchester City response. However, they did the exact opposite and City grabbed an equaliser moments before the half time whistle.
Despite the equaliser, Liverpool knew they were still in with a chance of producing the underdog victory and it was a 10-minute spell in the second half that ensured the win for the Reds. The goal to put Liverpool in the lead came from Roberto Firmino who shrugged off John Stones to produce an audacious chip over the onrushing Ederson and into the back of the net in the 61st minute. And this wasn't the last defensive mistake from the Manchester City back four that day with a mistake from Otamendi gifting Liverpool the third goal.
The goal came when Otamendi was robbed of the ball by Mohamed Salah who played the ball to Sadio Mane who didn't disappoint with the finish, releasing a left-footed piledriver into the top corner to put Liverpool 3-1 up. Liverpool then added a 4th minutes later to complete the 10-minute demolition of Manchester City with the mistake, this time, coming from Ederson. The Brazilian Shotstopper's attempted clearance fell to Mohammed Salah who took advantage of the empty net to send the Anfield crowd crazy who had seen one of the games of the season.
Manchester City attempted a comeback and, in fairness, they came close with a goal from Silva and Gundogan making the score 4-3. Although, this wasn't enough as the referee blew his whistle to give Liverpool and Anfield a memorable victory.
#2 Liverpool 2-0 Chelsea, Premier League 14/04/19
Liverpool vs Chelsea is always an exciting game and this one, like previous games, didn't disappoint. The Reds were in their first title race for years and were taking Manchester City all the way which made the game against Chelsea in April of 2019, all the more important.
Moreover, many Liverpool fans were nervous about a possible repeat of 2014 when Chelsea all but finished Liverpool's title hopes after a Steven Gerrard slip gifted Demba Ba a goal. But, Jurgen Klopp knew that things had changed dramatically since 2014 and Liverpool were better than ever. And this confidence showed on the pitch.
The opening goal took until the 51st minute to arrive but when it did, the Anfield crowd came alive. The goal came from the ever present Sadio Mane who found himself in the right place at the right time to head home from a Jordan Henderson cross to give Liverpool a much-needed lead. However, the moment of the match came minutes later from Mohamed Salah, a former Chelsea player. The Egyptian picked the ball up before cutting inside and releasing an unstoppable thunderbolt beyond the reach of Chelsea keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The goal sent the Anfield faithful into delirium who began to sing the name of the goalscorer. The 2-0 victory kept the title race alive as Liverpool avoided a repeat of 2014 with the Salah strike ensuring a memorable Anfield victory.
#3 Liverpool 4-0 Barcelona, Champions League Semi-Final 7/05/19
After losing 3-0 at the Nou Camp, Liverpool's Champions League dream seemed all but over with Messi's 600th goal for Barcelona sealing a momentous win on the night for Barcelona. To make matters Liverpool went into the second leg without two of their deadly front three with Salah and Firmino both out injured. This meant that Liverpool had to turn to the likes of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri who were usually used as bench players.
The odds were stacked against Liverpool who were hoping the Anfield crowd would work wonders once again. And the Reds got off to the perfect start with a goal from Divock Origi who had picked up where he left off after a winning goal against Newcastle in the week leading up to the game. The goal came within the first 10 minutes after a Jordan Henderson strike rebounded to Origi, who was gifted a tap in by Ter Stegen.
However, after the Origi goal, Liverpool never really pushed on and at half time with the score at just 1-0, Liverpool still had all the work to do in the second half. Moreover, their chances were not boosted after Andy Robertson had been forced off with an injury. This change turned out to be one of the best in the history of the Champions League.
The substitution gave Georginio Wijnaldum the chance to cement himself into the Liverpool history books which he happily took. His first goal came just 9 minutes after entering the pitch when a cross from Alexander-Arnold found the Dutchman who made no mistake with the finish. 2 minutes later, Liverpool were back on level terms with a second goal from Wijnaldum shocking the world.
The goal came from a Shaqiri cross which found the oncoming Dutchman who headed the ball past the helpless Ter Stegen to tie the proceedings. By this point, the trip to Madrid was very much back in the minds of Liverpool who knew they needed just one more piece of genius to wrap up one of the best comebacks of all time. And with just 11 minutes to go, that piece of genius came when Trent Alexander-Arnold decided to take the corner quickly to catch the Barcelona defenders napping and find Divock Origi who made no mistake to complete the comeback.
The corner will go down as one of the best the Champions League has seen as Alexander-Arnold's quick thinking sent Liverpool to Madrid. The 4-0 victory will go down as one of the greatest games Anfield and football has ever seen.
#4 Liverpool 1-0 Everton, Premier League 02/12/18
The Merseyside Derby has seen some great games over the years with strikes from the most unlikeliest of goalscorers like Phil Jagielka and Matthew Pennington. However, in December of 2018, Divock Origi produced one of the most unforgettable moments of the Merseyside Derby when he reannounced himself at Liverpool. What's more, the game itself came at a crucial time for Liverpool who were seeking their first title in over 20 years and knew the game against Everton was a must-win.
Although, up until the 95th minute, Liverpool were not winning and hadn't come close to grabbing the winning goal. And Liverpool fans will be the first to admit that when Jurgen Klopp sent Divock Origi on as a solution to the Reds' scoring problem, people were not exactly hopeful. After all, Origi had just returned from a failed loan move at Wolfsburg and his Liverpool career looked finished and for that reason, nobody could have predicted what happened next.
The goal came in the dying seconds of the game when a deep Liverpool free-kick fell to Van Dijk who met it with a sliced volley much to the disappointment of the Anfield faithful. However, luckily for Liverpool, the scuffed effort met the crossbar before falling kindly on the head of the incoming hero of the night, Divock Origi.
The goal will go down as one of the most bizarre goals in the history of the famous derby much to the embarrassment of Jordan Pickford who failed to reach the crossbar to tip the ball over. As the final whistle was blown, it was clear that Divock Origi's Liverpool career had been resurrected from the ashes of a failed loan move and into the Liverpool fans' hearts once again who rejoiced after another iconic Anfield victory.
#5 Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal, Premier League 29/12/18
Games between Liverpool and Arsenal always produce goals galore, and the game in December of 2018 was no different with an overall goals tally of 6 between the two sides. Although, 5 of those goals were scored by the home side.
Moreover, Liverpool went into this game in the middle of a title race against Manchester City and couldn't afford any slip-ups in a big game against Arsenal. However, it took just 11 minutes for the dreaded slip up to come with Ainsley Maitland-Niles finishing off a fine Arsenal counter-attack to put his side 1-0 up against the run of play.
This goal shocked many at Anfield who came into the ground expecting their team to smash an Arsenal side struggling for consistency. And, luckily for Liverpool fans, it didn't take long for Arsenal to return to their inconsistency and for Liverpool to turn the game on its head. The two Roberto Firmino goals came within two minutes of each other and just 3 minutes after the opening Arsenal goal. The first of 3 for Firmino on the night came after a deflection gave the Brazilian an open net to calmly slot home the equaliser.
After that, it didn't take long for Liverpool to break through a fairly penetrable Arsenal back 4. The Reds went on to score 3 more in the first half to end the half 4-1 up with all members of the deadly front 3 finding the back of the net. And the catalogue of goals included some special strikes. Roberto Firmino's second goal, in particular, is a memorable one after the Brazilian slalomed between and past 3 Arsenal players before finding the back of the net. The Liverpool number 9 completed his hat-trick in the second half from the penalty spot.
The game at Anfield finished 5-1 and the Liverpool front three had torn the Arsenal defence to pieces with a hat-trick from Roberto Firmino and a goal each for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Firmino's individual brilliance for his second goal will be the one remembered the most in the Reds' merciless mauling of Arsenal.
