Lamptey was tipped to be "the next Pele"

The Nii Lamptey story is an interesting one. Escaping from poverty and abuse in Ghana the attacker found himself in Belgium and Anderlecht before winning Ghana's first U17 World Cup in 1991. Lamptey won the Golden Ball at that tournament, which included Juan Sebastian Verón, Marcelo Gallardo and Alessandro del Piero.

Throughout his career, Lamptey was famously and relentlessly exploited by agents and handlers that never appeared to seek his best interest. This along with tragic family issues never saw the player maximise his undoubted potential.

The great Pele himself once labelled Lamptey the successor to his throne. Lamptey played for over 10 professional clubs in his career all over the world but never lived up to Pele's billing.

The Ghanaian also picked up an Olympic bronze medal for his country at the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona, when Ghana became the first African nation to win an Olympic medal for football at the time.
