Arthur made his debut for the senior side of Grêmio in 2015, and at the age of 18, under first team coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. He made 70 appearances for the Brazilian club and found the net 6 times.

The 21 year old midfielder signed a six year contract with FC Barcelona in March 2018, as the Catalan club reached an agreement with Grêmio for an initial transfer fee of €31 million plus €9 million in added variables.

Arthur attracted Barcelona's attention with his versatility in the midfield area as he usually plays in the central midfield position, but can also play as a central defensive midfielder or as an attacking midfielder. His versatile playing style will enable Valverde deploy him in the midfield according to the ongoing scenario of a game.

He featured in all 3 of Barcelona's pre-season games, and also scored a goal in the first game against Tottenham. He is expected to feature in the Spanish Super Cup tie in a traditional 4-3-3 formation, either as a LCM or RCM.
