#2. Luka Modric
Despite winning the Ballon d'Or last year, Luka Modric looks a shadow of his former self. The Croatian midfielder was unable to continue his majestic form which helped him win the Golden Ball in the World Cup last year.
The 33-year-old midfielder formed an indispensable trio with Toni Kroos and Casemiro but was unable to dominate the midfield like he used to do before. He was chasing the shadows of the likes of Frenkie De Jong as Ajax humiliated Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Modric has featured in 38 games so far this season, preferred by both Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari. But he has racked up only 4 goals and provided 6 assists in the season so far. Modric was obviously a key piece in the puzzle, which is why his failure gets more prominent when Real Madrid performs poorly.
Moreover, Modric will soon turn 34 in a few months and won't be able to perform at his best for 50 matches in all competitions. There were rumours linking him to Inter Milan and the Croatian may look for other options this summer.
