In 2015, the FA notoriously ushered in the Homegrown rule with the aim of seeing more English players playing for England’s elites. Greg Dyke, who was chairman of the FA at the time, introduced the law with the hope of giving the Three Lions a better chance at winning the 2022 World Cup. The rule states that Premier League teams must have at least eight homegrown players in their squad. For a player to qualify as a homegrown player, an individual must have been at an English club for a minimum of three years before the age of 21.

Jadon Sancho’s youth career was birthed in Watford for eight years until he moved to Manchester City at the age of 15 for four years. As it stands, Manchester United currently have ten homegrown players, however, with Paul Pogba’s latest comments, they may be nearing the threshold shortly. On a side note, English fans would love nothing more than to see a young British player playing for the biggest club in the country. It’s a win-win.
