Over the years, Cristiano Ronaldo has cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greatest goalscorers. The 34-year-old's numbers are well documented, but he also seems to have perfected the ability to score when it matters most.

However, in 2018/19, the Portuguese failed to meet his usual levels. His age, a new league and years of optimum performance took a toll on him. In total, he scored 28 goals in all competitions, with 21 coming in the league. These are his lowest totals since his last season at Manchester United in 2009, when he scored 18 league goals and 26 in all competitions.

He's some way behind other top strikers, finishing fourth in the race to be crowned Capocannoniere, behind Fabio Quagliarella of Sampdoria (26 goals), Duvan Zapata of Atalanta (23 goals) and Kryzysztof Piatek (22 goals). In Europe, he was further down the pecking order, finishing in an unfamiliar 14th position as Lionel Messi won a record-extending sixth European Golden Shoe.

While Messi might have kept to his usual monstrous levels in front of goal, scoring 51 goals from 50 matches in all competitions, his eternal rival 'struggled' and the numbers rule him out of the running for a sixth Ballon d'Or.
