A more unlikely transfer, but with Roma Sporting Director Monchi's clout and history, not an impossible one.
Roma is smarting from the embarrassment that Barcelona caused them by pilfering Malcom from right under their noses and have indeed threatened legal action against the Catalan club.
They will be looking to make an immediate comeback from that transfer loss with another big-name signing and could turn to their Serie A rivals for a replacement.
Ivan Perisic has been one of the most consistent wingers in the Serie A for the last couple of seasons with Inter Milan and further boosted his reputation with an emphatic performance for runners-up Croatia at the World Cup.
After three seasons with Inter Milan, the 29-year-old Perisic would be seeking new adventures at a bigger club, with Champions League football (which Roma offers) as an added attraction.
He has long been a target of Mourinho's at Manchester United, and interest in him was rekindled after the World Cup, but the Old Trafford club has failed to meet Inter Milan's valuation of him.
If signed, he will represent a better and more experienced upgrade on Malcom. Though whether Roma can cough out the funds required for his transfer remains to be seen.
