While Madrid may not be one of the frontrunners to go all the way in the Champions League this season, with Zidane back at the helm, Madrid would hope to improve on their Round of 16 exit last season and at least make the last four of the competition.

That may not be easy though as the Bernabeu team locks horns with English champions Manchester City for a place in the quarterfinals. Madrid would hope to look at Eden Hazard for inspiration as the Belgian midfielder would look to turn around his underwhelming return of just 8 goals in the Champions League.

#3 Bring in personnel to bolster central midfield

Attack and midfield were the areas of prime concern for Zidane as he took charge of Madrid for the second time in 2019.

With Karim Benzema's form upfront and the confident performances of Brazilian teenager Rodrygo, those fears may be allayed for a while. While Madrid do need a proven attacker like a Neymar or a Kylian Mbappe to bolster their attacking ranks, it is in midfield, more specifically in central midfield, where the primary concern lies.

Key midfield personnel like Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are on the wrong side of 30 and may not have too many 'top performance' years in their ageing legs. The signing of Frenchman Paul Pogba, Ajax's Donny van de Beek, and Tottenham Hotspur's Christian Eriksen who would be available on a free transfer at the end of the 2019-20 season would strengthen the Madrid midfield as the 13-time European winners look to remain competitive on multiple fronts.
