Chelsea, host Barcelona in one of the most important matches of Antonio Conte’s managerial career. The gaffer is going through difficult time and needs his side to put ion a fighting display to stand any chance of beating the unbeaten side in La Liga.

Going by the current form, Barcelona are clear favourites to advance to the next round but one can't underestimate Chelsea. As Chelsea and Barcelona prepare to meet again tomorrow, we take a look at the games where Chelsea beat Barcelona in the Champions League.


Chelsea 3-1 Barcelona

Date: Wednesday, 5th April 2000

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Attendance: 34,000

Chelsea and Barcelona locked horns in the Quarterfinals of 1999/2000 Champions League season. Barcelona, under then manager Louis van Gaal, were regarded by pundits as favourites to win the Champions League.

Both teams started the match on a positive note. In the opening 30 minutes, both teams were trying to assert their authority in the midfield. The match was in the balance when to the disbelief of Barcelona, in the space of just eight minutes, Chelsea scored three goals to take a vital 3-0 lead. Gianfranco Zola opened the scoring and Tore Andre Flo's brace made it three.

Luis Figo scored in the 74th minute to give Barcelona a vital away goal. Though Chelsea won the home leg, they were beaten 5-1 away from home as Barcelona made it to the semi-finals.

Attendance: 42,449

Chelsea trailed 2-1 after the first leg at the Nou Camp. They needed something dramatic to overcome the deficit. Jose Mourinho was forced to start Mateja Kezman in attack alongside Eidur Gudjohnsen as the first choice striker Didier Drogba was out with a suspension.

With just 19 minutes on the clock, goals from Lampard, Duff and Gudjohnsen put hosts on the top. Chelsea were in the driving seat with an aggregate score 4-2 in their favour

But things are never as simple as they seem against Barcelona; in the 24th minute, the Blaugrana won a penalty and Ronaldinho calmly smashed it past Petr Cech to bring the away side back in the game.

Barcelona were still trailing by a goal on aggregate. In the 38th minute, Ronaldinho struck again to bring the score level on aggregate. The Spanish side were in complete control of the game with two away goals in their pocket.

With 14 minutes to the final whistle, though, Terry had the last laugh as he scored a header to give Chelsea a memorable win.

This time Chelsea and Barcelona met in Group stage of the 2006/07 season. Didier Drogba's solitary goal handed Jose Mourinho's Chelsea a well-deserved win.

Chelsea faced a daunting task as they were without their both first choice and second choice goalkeeper. They were forced to start the match with their third choice goalkeeper Henrique Hilario.

The Blues broke the deadlock seconds after the first half with a beautiful strike from Drogba. Barcelona enjoyed plenty of possession but Chelsea defended with grit, determination and concentration and were successful in keeping the Barcelona side from scoring.

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Attendance: 38,039

This time Chelsea met Barcelona in the semifinals of the Champions League. The hosts won 1-0 at the Stamford Bridge in what was Barcelona's first loss of the season. Later, Chelsea went on to beat Bayern Munich in the final of Champions League to lift the title.

Barcelona, as usual, dominated the possession. With 72% possession, Barcelona controlled the game but Chelsea had the final say owing to their pace on the counter. Their organization at the back paid off as they were successful in keeping Lionel Messi and company at bay.
