Jose Mourinho's Chelsea side took on Rafa Benitez's Liverpool for a chance to get their hands on the League cup trophy. Liverpool were appearing in their 10th League Cup final while Chelsea were playing only their fourth.

John Arne Riise gave The Reds a dream start as he struck a sweet volley past the keeper during the opening minute of the game to give his side an early advantage. The equalizer came in the form of an open goal as Steven Gerrard's headed clearance flew past his own keeper.

The game went to extra-time as the score stood 1-1 at the end of normal time. It was Chelsea who dominated from then as they scored two goals in quick succession to take a 3-1 lead. Antonio Nunez pulled one back for Liverpool but they failed to score one more as the final whistle blew at Cardiff.
