Chelsea entered second leg of the quarter-final with a 3-1 away win at Anfield which meant that even a 2-0 defeat could take them to the semis. Requiring an excellent performance, Liverpool got off to a perfect start as Fabio Aurelio and Xabi Alonso converted their chances to give their side a 2-0 lead at half-time.

The second half saw a complete turnaround as Chelsea reproduced their first leg performance by scoring three goals in the space of 25 minutes to crush the hopes of Liverpool fans.

Lucas Leiva and Dirk Kuyt scored two goals in quick succession which meant that one more goal from Liverpool could take them to semi-final by means of the away-goal rule.

However, the goal came from the other end as Frank Lampard's shot hit the post and went in as the scoreline read 4-4 to the dismay of the Liverpool supporters.
