Elegant on the pitch, stylish off it and flashy in appearance, Cristiano Ronaldo cannot boast of the same when it comes to the statue erected in his honour back in Portugal. The Juventus star was immortalised in Funchal on the island of Madeira.

The artist, Emmanuel Santos, after the unveiling named it Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo. However, the statue was exposed to international ridicule after its photos went viral on social media.

Santos, however, defended his work, saying he doesn’t expect everybody to be pleased with what he made.

In an interview with The Guardian, he said:

"It was impossible to please the Greeks and Trojans. Nor did Jesus please everyone.

"What matters is the impact that this work generated. There is always the possibility of making a difference. I was prepared for all this.”

Explanations are always welcome, but the fact is that Ronaldo’s statue was awful.
