Manchester City could create history at the Etihad on Saturday. The Citizens could become the first team in Premier League history to win the title with six games to spare.
The Premier League has had a few world class manager but no one has been able to win the title this early, not even Sir Alex Ferguson. Manchester City could even cross the total of 100 points if they manage to win five and draw one of their remaining seven games.
On that note, let’s take a look at the earliest title wins in Premier League history.
#5 Chelsea 2014/15 - 3 games to spare
Chelsea secured their fifth Premier League title by beating Crystal Palace 1-0 at the Stamford Bridge on 3rd May 2015. Jose Mourinho did exceptionally well during his second tenure at the club as they romped to the League title with 3 games left in the season.
Diego Costa and Eden Hazard were the best attacking players with 20 and 14 goals respectively while the duo of John Terry and Nemanja Matic played key roles to make the side hard to score against.
Chelsea finished the season with 87 points, eight more than the second-placed Manchester City. Arsenal and Manchester United finished third and fourth respectively.
#4 Chelsea 2004/05 - 3 games to spare
Jose Mourinho's ended Chelsea’s 50-year wait for a Premier League title in 2004/05. In his first season at England, the Portuguese manager led the Blues to the title win with three games to spare.
Didier Drogba, Eidur Gudjohnsen, and Frank Lampard were amongst the goals for Chelsea while John Terry and Peter Cech had a solid season at the back. Claude Makelele deserved a special mention here for his phenomenal performances in midfield.
They won the title with a record-breaking 95 points, conceding just 15 goals during the season. Chelsea sealed the title with a 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers on 30th April. They finished 12 points more than the second-placed Arsenal.
#3 Manchester United 2012/13 - 4 games to spare
Sir Alex Ferguson had won a record-breaking 38 trophies during his time at the Old Trafford and his last season turned out to be big for Manchester United.
Though United was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16, they won the Premier League title with 4 games to spare. United finished the season with 89 points, 11 more than second-placed Manchester City, and sealed the title on 28th April 2013 when they beat Aston Villa.
With 26 goals, Robin van Persie was the top scorer for Manchester United. Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez played the supporting roles to van Persie, scoring 10 and 12 goals respectively. The Red Devils scored 86 goals in the season, 20 more than Manchester City.
#2 Arsenal 2003/04 - 4 games to spare
The north Londoners set the record in Premier League when they became the first team in Premier League history to win the title without losing a single game in the season. It earned them the nickname “The Invincibles”.
They racked up 90 points during the season, winning 26 games in the process. They finished 11 points above Chelsea and clinched the title at White Hart Lane with 4 games to spare. A 2-2 draw against their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur was enough for them to win the title.
Thierry Henry finished the season with 30 goals while Robert Pirès struck 14. Patrick Vieira and Ashley Cole were brilliant in midfield and defence for the Gunners.
#1 Manchester United 1999/00 - 4 games to spare
Manchester United’s 25th consecutive season in the English top division football had a glorious ending to it. The Red Devils won the Premier League title with a record 18-point margin and became the first team to clinch the Premier League title with four games to spare.
Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke were the star performers for the Manchester United side with 19 and 20 goals respectively. United racked up 91 points during the season and finished with 97 goals, 24 more than the second-placed Arsenal.
They clinched the title on 22nd April 2000 when they defeated Southampton 3-1 away from home on matchday 34.
