5 longest winning streaks in the Premier League

Stoke City v Manchester City - Premier League
Where does Guardiola's team rank?

Manchester City's winning spree was brought to a halt by their goalless draw against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

While Pep Guardiola's men are still unbeaten in the Premier League, this season, their 18-match winning run ended on Sunday.

Their form this season has made the title race boring but that only adds to the miraculous nature of Manchester City's winning streak.

With the Premier League as competitive as it is now, it is truly remarkable to see what Guardiola has achieved so far.

Let us take a look at the 5 longest winning runs in a single season in the Premier League and find out where Guardiola's current winning machine ranks.

#5 Liverpool, 2013/14 - 11 wins (Joint 4th)

Everton v Liverpool - Premier League
Luis Suarez took defences apart at will during the winning streak

Liverpool threw down the marker for a Premier League title challenge with a 5-1 win over Arsenal in early February 2014 and won their next 10 games through to the end of April, scoring 38 goals in the process, with Uruguay International Luis Suarez leading the scoring charts.

There was a 3-0 win at Manchester United along with home triumphs over Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City, fueling the belief that it could be Liverpool's year.

But a 2-0 home defeat at Anfield to Chelsea, featuring captain Steven Gerrard's infamous slip, knocked the Reds off course and a draw at Crystal Palace saw them miss out on a maiden Premier League title.

#4 Manchester United, 2008/09 and 1999/2000 - 11 wins (Joint 4th)

Manchester United v Manchester City - Premier League
Ronaldo was deadly in front of goal for the Red Devils

Manchester United have had two instances, where they won 11 matches in a row, once in 1999/2000 and once in 2008/2009. In both of those seasons, they finished as champions.

Manchester United dominated the 1999/00 Premier League season and their 11-game winning streak ran from March through to the end of the season in May. Sir Alex Ferguson's men scored 37 goals during the run, including seven against West Ham and four against Bradford, Middlesbrough and Sunderland in a wonderful four-game spell showing incredible attacking prowess.

United eventually won the Premier League by a record 18 points, with 97 goals to their name.

For the second time, they won 11 games in a row between Boxing Day 2008 and March 2009 and kept nine clean sheets in the process. As a matter of fact, they conceded just twice in that impressive run while scoring 21 goals. That defensive record was shattered in stunning style by arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford in a 4-1 win for the Reds.

However, United, with Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez and Edwin van der Sar on their team, sealed the third Premier League title in a row and equalled Liverpool's record of 18 league crowns.

#3 Arsenal, 2001/02 season - 13 wins (Joint 2nd)

Thierry Henry of Arsenal celebrates
The Arsenal side boasted Thierry Henry at the top of his game

Arsenal won a record 13 Premier League matches in a row at the end of the 2001/02 season, starting and ending against Everton.

From February to May, Arsene Wenger's men were unstoppable and wrapped up the Premier League title in the penultimate round of fixtures with a 1-0 win at Old Trafford.

Arguably, the closest the run came to ending was against Tottenham Hotspur in early April.

Arsenal took the lead through Freddie Ljungberg’s goal but Highbury was silenced when referee Mark Halsey awarded Spurs a penalty and Teddy Sheringham converted from the spot.

Five minutes later Arsenal were awarded an equally debatable penalty for a tangle between Dean Richards and Thierry Henry which Cameroonian Lauren coolly slotted in to secure an eighth successive win.

Those 13 wins secured a seven-point margin of victory at the top of the Premier League table along with an FA Cup triumph, their second double under the Frenchman.

#2 Chelsea, 2016/17 - 13 wins (Joint 2nd)

Chelsea v Sunderland - Premier League
Chelsea lifted the trophy last season after a record winning streak

Antonio Conte was under pressure following Chelsea's shaky start to the season and a 3-0 defeat at Arsenal in September, but then, the Italian oversaw a remarkable turnaround in form.

Chelsea had gone four matches without a win in all competitions but a formation change led to a 13-match winning streak, in which, the Blues conceded just four times.

Tottenham Hotspur eventually ended the run, winning 2-0 at White Hart Lane, but Chelsea went on to win the league with a record 30 wins in the season.

#1: Manchester City, 2017/18 - 18 wins

Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion - Premier League
Guardiola has got City playing the best football ever seen in England

Ederson’s last-gasp penalty heroics saved Manchester City from defeat but the 0-0 stalemate at Crystal Palace brought the Premier League leaders’ record-breaking 18-match winning run to an end.

Still unbeaten in the league, Manchester City have looked out of this world at times this season, playing football never before seen on the English shores.

They have already completely outplayed Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur along with some late winners in tight matches to prove that they have the mentality of champions.

This team might go down in history as the best team in the Premier League when the season ends and we are fortunate to have witnessed this incredible team play.
