5 most humiliating defeats in Jose Mourinho's career

Mourinho
Jose has had his fair share of low points

Jose Mourinho has won a lot in his career. The Portuguese has made a name for himself by winning silverware with some of the best teams in the world. His resume includes the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Inter Milan and now Manchester United.

But Jose has also had his fair share of losses some of them by margins he wouldn’t dream of. Everyone is susceptible to a drubbing and Mourinho's teams despite losing, have more often that not bounced back.

Some humiliations have taken longer than others to recover from but there have been moments which have been talked about at length because of the amount of media attention he garners.

So here are the 5 worst defeats Jose Mourinho has endured in his managerial career so far.

5) Chelsea 0-3 Middlesbrough

Chelsea under Jose Mourinho were normally defensively solid, compact and didn’t lose much during the time when they won two back to back league titles, and when they did lose it wasn’t by a very high margin but there are exceptions to every rule.

Chelsea were cruising to the league title in February, when struggling Boro came along to Stamford Bridge. They had just lost 4-0 the previous weekend to Aston Villa so nothing but a Chelsea win was expected.

But the match took a twist when Rochemback gave Boro the lead in the second minute of the game.It continued to go from bad to worse for Chelsea at the Bridge as Boro increased their tally to 2-0 through Stewart Downing.

The Blues’ defense were all over the place and were outplayed by a Boro side who had initially come there to only earn a point. Chelsea’s miserable day was complete when Yakubu finally got a very well deserved goal to make it 3-0

This was only Jose’s third loss ever in his 20-month reign at Chelsea with their previous two losses coming against Manchester United and Manchester City and remains his heaviest defeat at the Bridge.

This is what he told BBC after the game: “We lost to Manchester City and didn't deserve it, we lost at Manchester United and didn't deserve it. We lost today 3-0 - and we deserved it.”

4) Tottenham 5-3 Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur never loved playing Chelsea in the Premier League because of their poor record against the Blues. They have always been undone by their much wealthier opponents on several occasions but this game marked the end of their torrent spell temporarily at least.

Top of the table Chelsea came to the Lane in 2014 in low spirits after a run of not so good results having surrendered their considerable lead over the past few games. The game started in good fashion for the Blues after Diego Costa opened the scoring.

But Jose had a tough talk at half time after what ensued in the remaining part of the first half. Spurs equalized very quickly as Harry Kane scored the first of his two goals on the night.

Danny Rose made it 2-1 with a fine strike followed by an Andros Townsend penalty right on the cusp of half-time. It got worse just 7 minutes after the restart as Kane scored again.

Costa got one back to make it 4-2 but Nacer Chadli made the win safe by scoring a 5th with 10 minutes to go. Terry got another consolation just before full time but the damage had been done. This was the first time Jose’s Chelsea had conceded 4 in a match. It would be another 2 years before that happened again to one of his sides.

3) Borussia Dortmund 4-1 Real Madrid

Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have dominated the world of football for the last 7 to 8 years.Together they have won 5 of the last 8 champions League trophies mainly because of the star power they boast.

But even the greatest of sides are susceptible to heavy defeats. That’s exactly what happened to Real Madrid in 2013 when they came up against a very hungry and dangerous Borussia Dortmund side.

It was a Spain-Germany encounter in the both semi-finals that year as Bayern played Barca in the other semi-final. Jurgen Klopp had become a very popular manager with his heavy metal footballing style.

But Madrid were expected to come away with something against a much younger and inexperienced Dortmund. What happened is a day Madrid fans would never forget. The Germans ran riot against Los Blancos as Lewandowski scored all 4 goals that evening.

Several records tumbled as Mourinho suffered his worst ever defeat in the Champions League, with Lewandowski becoming the first ever player to score a hat-trick against Madrid in the competition.

2) Chelsea 4-0 Manchester United

After just 6 months of being sacked as Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho to the shock of Chelsea fans who were very vocal in the support of the Special even when he was under fire for poor results, took up the reigns of Manchester United.

Former Italy and Juventus manager, Antonio Conte was appointed as Blues boss. Both Conte and Mourinho didn’t have the best of starts to the season. Conte lost both big games against Liverpool and Arsenal with the latter being a 3-0 humiliation at the Emirates.

United had been outplayed by Watford and had lost bragging rights to Manchester City in the first Pep vs Mourinho meeting of the season. So when the time came for Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge both sides desperately needed a win to put a stamp of authority on the league.

A lot was said about the fallout between Jose and his best players at Chelsea last season and from the performance on display from his former stars it was clear they were out for vengeance.

Chelsea ended up humiliating Jose and his United team and only for the second time in Premier League history a Mourinho led team conceded 4. It started out in the worst possible fashion as Pedro sneaked in behind with the United defense falling asleep and scored into an empty net.

Gary Cahill made it two in 20 minutes after another mixup. Eden Hazard made it 3 after a fine move and a neat finish at the end of it. N’Golo Kante who had scored just once until this game made it 4 with a wonderful piece of skill to send Smalling the wrong way and pass the ball into the net.

1) Barcelona 5-0 Real Madrid

When you are given the responsibility of managing two of the biggest clubs in Europe one of the priorities set out by the superior is not to lose the El Clasico. Not being humiliated against your biggest rival is gospel.

Sadly for Mourinho the very first thing he did once he was appointed as Real Madrid manager was to break that very rule. When Pep Guardiola was announced as manager of Barcelona some part of Jose MOurinho’s ego was hurt considering for how long he was associated with the Catalans.

Jose and Pep were also reported to be good friends when the former was assistant coach and Pep was a player. In many ways, he took the Madrid job to prove how wrong Barcelona were in not choosing him as their manager.

But his first ever Clasico taught Jose a very harsh lesson, one that he’ll carry with him for the rest of his life. Madrid were outplayed in every department on the pitch as a Leo Messi inspired performance drove Barca to rout their eternal rivals 5-0.

How Jose managed to keep the job after that disaster is still a mystery to many but he still remains the only manager to win the La Liga title for Madrid since Cristiano Ronaldo joined the club.
