Timo Wener has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the summer.

Liverpool FC is currently one of the most exciting teams in Europe. From the lethal trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino in attack to Fabinho in midfield to Virgil van Dijk in defense and Alisson between the sticks - Liverpool has a backbone of world-class players.

Gone are the dark days when once Roy Hodgson said that Liverpool was not big enough to be in the relegation zone. Also gone are days when players would look to leave the club as soon as a "bigger" club came around.

Ever since the arrival of Jurgen Klopp, apart from Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool has not sold any of their main players and this has stabilized the club. The style of play has improved drastically and top-level players actually want to play for the shirt.

Players are not afraid to reject clubs like Real Madrid and PSG to play for Liverpool. Klopp has transformed the club to the European elite and the affirmation of the progress is in the fact that Liverpool is challenging for the Premier League title this season. Not to forget they reached the final of the Champions League final last season.

For all the praises about Liverpool's starting 11, their bench is not that strong. At least not as much as other European elites.

Here are 5 players Liverpool should look to sign in the summer to increase the squad quality:

#1 Timo Werner

Timo Werner
Timo Werner

The 22-year-old German international is one of the top targets for Liverpool this summer. The RB Leipzig forward has scored 11 goals in the 21 Bundesliga matches that he has played so far this season. That amounts to one goal in every 157 minutes.

One of the major advantages of having Timo Werner is his versatile style of play. He can play in all the three forward positions (on the left, on the right and through the middle). Also, the fact that attackers in Klopp’s system are flexible throughout a game makes Timo the perfect fit for Liverpool.

If all these reasons are not enough, there is also the matter of linking up with good friend Naby Keita at Liverpool. The duo was one of the best in Bundesliga in 2016/17 season which ultimately led Leipzig to finish runners up to eventual champions Bayern Munich.

Signing Werner would lessen the burden on Roberto Firmino. The other strikers in the team, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi, are not really up to the standards of Liverpool and Werner would be a definite upgrade over them.

#2 Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech

Hakim Ziyech is a Moroccan international who plays for Eredivisie side Ajax Amsterdam in the attacking midfielder role.

Ever since the departure of Philippe Coutinho, Liverpool has been desperate for a creative midfielder who can play a ball through the opposition. The current midfielders are workhorses but not necessarily creative. Naby Keita is an exception to others but has not really hit the ground running.

Liverpool was actively looking for a creative/attacking midfielder last summer. Nabil Fekir was earmarked for that position but the deal fell through because of medical reasons.

Ziyech would probably be the most suitable player for Liverpool without breaking the bank in today’s market. The former FC Twente player has got the skills to open up spaces for his teammates which would in turn help to unleash The Reds' deadly attacking trio. Ziyech has had his breakout season in terms of goals and assists in scoring 14 goals and assisting a further 11 goals.

#3 Jonathan Tah

Jonathan Tah
Jonathan Tah

Jonathan Tah is a German international who plies his trade in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen. The 23-year-old imposing center back made his debut for Hamburger SV before moving to Leverkusen.

Tah made his Germany debut at the age of 20 years against England. His style of play involves dribbling and short passes. The German has averaged 1.4 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 4.6 clearances and 0.8 blocks per game this season in 22 Bundesliga matches.

Liverpool clearly needs a CB because apart from Virgil Van Dijk, they have Joe Gomez who is exceptionally good and has the potential to be great but gets those long term injuries far too often through no fault of his own. Joel Matip is a decent backup and Dejan Lovren is good on his day but far too injury prone and error-ridden.

The lack of decent backups was felt this season when Fabinho had to play in the CB role due to injuries. So, the signing of Tah is a no brainer for Liverpool.

#4 Ryan Sessegnon

The teenage sensation Ryan Sessegnon has caused ripples in the British football circle. The 2018 Championship Player of the season Fulham youngster is one of the most sought after players in England with Tottenham, Liverpool interested in the player.

Sessegnon is an attack-minded player who plays on the left side of midfield but can also play as a left back and a left winger.

Though a little weak in a defensive contribution, while attacking is one of the best. With age on his side, it will only get better. Some areas of improvement are definitely on passing and hold up play. But that will improve gradually with better players around.

In terms of stats, defensive contributions are 0.7 tackles,0.5 interceptions,1.3 clearances and 0.1 blocks per match. In the offensive side of the field, Sessegnon has scored 2 goals and assisted another 5 in the 25 matches played this season which includes 8 substitute appearances.

With the possible departure of Alberto Moreno, Sessegnon can deputize for Andy Robertson as well as Sadio Mane.

#5 Steven Bergwijn

Steven Berwijn

Probably the least famous name out of the five, Steven Berwijn is a Dutch professional player who plays for Eredivisie side PSV Eindhoven in the left winger position but can also play on the right side and as a center forward.

Dribbling and cutting inside are some of his strongest traits. Occasional long shots are also in the repertoire, although he's a bit weak in the air.

Bergwijn has scored 9 goals and assisted a further 12 times in the 22 Eredivisie matches played so far this season.

This form has attracted interest from the premier league side Manchester United and it remains to be seen whether there is a follow up to the interest. Tottenham was also interested in the winger's services during the January transfer but according to reports, Manchester United is Bergwijn's preferred destination.

Bergwijn can be the perfect replacement for any forward in Liverpool’s lineup and add a different dimension through trickery and dribbling.
