Fernando Hierro, who managed Spain at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, appeared in 497 La Liga games during a distinguished playing career, with the bulk of them coming for Real Madrid.

The centre-back, who could play in a bevvy of midfield positions and was known for his set-piece prowess, received 15 red cards in the La Liga.

Hierro, with as many as nine direct send-offs, holds the rather unwanted record of receiving the most direct red cards in La Liga history.

#2 Juanito (16 red cards)

Former Real Betis centre-back Juanito, who played 312 La Liga games during a 17-year-long professional career, held the record of receiving the most red cards in the competition till he was recently overtaken.

Juanito won the 2004-05 Copa Del Rey with Real Betis in 2004-05 and the UEFA Europa League with Atletico Madrid in 2009-10.

#1 Sergio Ramos (20 red cards)

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, who holds the record of scoring the most La Liga goals by a defender, has been sent off on as many as 20 occasions, which is the most by any player in the competition's history.

For one of the most distinguished goal-scoring centre-backs in the game, Ramos has a pretty ordinary disciplinary record. During his 16 seasons in the La Liga, the former Sevilla player has received a red card in every season except two.

Not surprisingly, Ramos, who has been sent off on a record five occasions in El Clasico history, has also seen red on four occasions in the Champions League - an unwanted record he shares with two other players (Zlatan Ibrahimovich and Edgar Davids).
