The summer transfer window has seen record arrivals and statement signings. Premier League clubs once again invested huge sums in their pursuit of success.

Romelu Lukaku re-joined Chelsea for a club-record transfer. The Blues also managed to seal the loan capture of Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid on deadline day.

Cristiano Ronaldo sealed a sensational return to Manchester United after initially being linked with Premier League rivals Manchester City. While City missed out on Ronaldo, they did get their hands on Jack Grealish, shelling out a record £100 million for the English international.

A few Premier League players failed to secure their desired transfer

A number of leading players have secured dream moves to new pastures. But few saw their potential deals fail to materialize before the transfer deadline on Tuesday evening.

As such, we take a look at the five Premier League players who failed to secure a move away from their club this summer.

#5 Tanguy Ndombele - Tottenham Hotspur

Tanguy Ndombele became Tottenham's record signing in 2019 when he moved to the Premier League club from Lyon for a fee of £55 million. However, he has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League since moving to North London.

Both former manager Jose Mourinho and current manager Nuno Espirito Santo have questioned the midfielder's application.

It was reported that Ndombele had requested to leave the club in the final weeks of the transfer window and Spurs had reluctantly accepted his wish. But the midfielders mammoth £200,000-a-week wages saw nobody consider a move for him.

It now leaves Ndombele in a pickle with the midfielder not even involved in the club's pre-season or opening Premier League fixtures of the season. He will have a decision to make on whether to wait for a transfer opportunity elsewhere or knuckle down and force his way into Nuno's plans.

There's no doubt that the Frenchman is exceptionally talented. Spurs have made a strong start to the Premier League season. And the addition of a committed Ndombele to their ranks will be a major boost for the North Londoners.

#4 Jesse Lingard - Manchester United

Jesse Lingard rejuvenated his career last season following a successful six-month loan spell in the Premier League at West Ham.

Lingard failed to make a single Premier League appearance for Manchester United in the first half of the campaign. But the England international thrived at West Ham and helped the Hammers to Europa League qualification. He scored nine goals and provided four assists in just 16 Premier League appearances in the capital. It also helped him earn a recall to the England squad after an almost two-year absence.

It looked like West Ham will make the transfer permanent following Lingard's successful loan spell. But the Red Devils' £30 million asking price was deemed too much for a player entering into the final season of his contract.

The failure to find a breakthrough instead led the Hammers to alternative targets, signing Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow on the final day of the transfer window.

Lingard remains at Manchester United for now. But the transfer in of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho means that Lingard's prospects for first-team football look bleak at Old Trafford.

Having found his form after a difficult 18 months on and off the pitch, Lingard will hope he is not restricted to another lengthy lay-off on the bench.

#3 James Rodriguez - Everton

It seems not long ago that James Rodriguez was winning hearts at Everton following a fine start to his maiden Premier League campaign. The Colombian was Everton's marquee signing last summer. He was brought in to help turn things around at Goodison Park under the management of Carlo Ancelotti.

But just 12 months on it looks like Rodriguez's career could be over at Goodison Park. Carlo Ancelotti's shock departure to Real Madrid didn't help matters. But the fact that Rodriguez also wanted to move on has left Everton fans feeling rather let down this summer.

The Colombian even remarkably admitted to not knowing who Everton's next opponents in the Premier League recently were while playing video games on Twitch.

It seemed that Rodriguez would seal a move in the final weeks of the transfer window, with Porto wanting to re-sign him. However, a deal which included Luis Diaz going in the opposite direction could not be reached and now Rodriguez seems to be stuck at Everton until January.

#2 Bernardo Silva - Manchester City

Watching Bernardo Silva's performances in the Premier League against Norwich City and Arsenal, you would have no idea that he wants to leave Manchester City.

The Portuguese international featured in both of City's 5-0 wins. He provided the spark of creativity City lacked in their 1-0 defeat to Tottenham on the opening weekend of the Premier League.

Yet the 27-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract, was looking to leave Manchester City this summer. The Portugal international's influence in the City team has dwindled over the past 18 months, frequently finding himself on the bench.

Pep Guardiola himself admitted that Bernardo Silva approached him to request a move away from City this summer. He added that there were several reasons behind his wish to leave the Premier League champions, including a desire to move closer to his native Portugal.

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid and Barcelona were strongly linked over the summer. But they were put off by demand from City's transfer chiefs, who were determined not to let the 27-year-old depart on the cheap.

Silva is likely to see out the entire season in the Premier League at the Etihad but many are expecting him to make a move to Spain next summer.

#1 Ainsley Maitland-Niles - Arsenal

This was one of the most astonishing transfer stories during the final week of the transfer window.

With less than 48-hours to go before the window closed, Ainsley Maitland-Niles extraordinarily took to Instagram. He decided to publicly confront Arsenal on why he wasn't granted a loan move to Everton.

The Toffees had tabled a formal offer with an obligation to buy, but were rejected by the Gunners with Mikel Arteta intent on keeping the right-back at the club.

Meanwhile, Maitland-Niles, who is yet to start for Arsenal in the Premier League this season, has become concerned that his career has stagnated at Arsenal. He has fallen down the pecking order with new signings. This include Nuno Tavares along with Callum Chambers and Cedric Soares playing ahead of him at right-back in the Premier League this season.

The England international's public outburst was not well received by Arteta, but he has since held talks with the player, insisting that he wants to keep him at the club.

It remains to be seen whether Maitland-Niles will get more minutes in the Premier League. But should the situation remain the same, a six-month loan move will definitely be on the cards once the window opens in January.
