For much of this season, it seemed an inevitability that Manchester City would break the record for the most goals scored in a Premier League season. Their prolific rate of scoring has decreased slightly in recent weeks but it remains eminently achievable.
Pep Guardiola’s side have scored 93 goals and have five games remaining. They need another 11 to surpass the record total set by Chelsea eight years ago.
To put their goal scoring into context, Manchester City have already matched their own Premier League record set when they won their first title in 2012. But there are teams they are yet to catch.
Here are five sides that have scored the most in a single Premier League campaign.
#5 Manchester City - 2011/12 (93 goals)
Had Manchester City scored 92 goals they would not have been champions. But they didn't. They scored 93, the last of which came from the boot of Sergio Aguero in the final seconds of the final game of the season against QPR.
It led to Martin Tyler's famous commentary and to scenes of delirium in the Etihad stands. The 3-2 win gave Manchester City the title, ahead of rivals Manchester United, by virtue of goal difference.
Their proficiency in goal proved crucial: they scored four more than Alex Ferguson's Manchester United and that, in the end, was the difference.
#4 Manchester United - 1999/00 (97 goals)
Long before the prolific attacking teams of recent years, Manchester United set the record for most goals scored in a season with 97 in 2000.
Perhaps in an attempt to compensate for their defensive deficiencies, Alex Ferguson's side became known for an almost relentlessly offensive approach, with Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole leading the line.
At the back, they were beset by goalkeeping issues: Mark Bosnich made 23 appearances, while Raimond van der Gouw and the infamous Massimo Taibi also featured.
But it didn't matter. Manchester United was uncontainable and won the title with 91 points and an 18-point gap to Arsenal in second.
#3 Liverpool - 2013/14 (101 goals)
Liverpool are the only side on this list that failed to win the Premier League title. In the 2013/14 season, they scored 101 goals but finished second to Manchester City, who scored 102.
That was largely because Brendan Rodgers' side could not defend: their 50 goals conceded was 13 more than Manchester City and 23 more than third-placed Chelsea.
In attack, though, Liverpool was blistering. Luis Suarez scored 31 goals and Daniel Sturridge 21, while Raheem Sterling excelled out wide.
But it wasn't enough. Defeat late in the season to Chelsea saw them lose out by two points.
#2 Manchester City - 2013/14 (102 goals)
In what was a war of attrition with Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool, Manchester City came out on top.
Manuel Pellegrini's side scored one more than their title rivals, thanks largely to the distribution of goals throughout the squad.
Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko led the way in attack but Alvaro Negredo, Samir Nasri and David Silva all contributed.
In the end, though, it was a superior defence that gave Manchester City the edge over Liverpool.
#1 Chelsea - 2009/10 (103 goals)
Carlo Ancelotti's Chelsea remain the Premier League's record scorers. Led by Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard - who scored 29 and 22 goals respectively - the Blues beat Manchester United to the title by one point.
Their prolific season included a 7-1 win over Aston Villa, a 7-0 win against Stoke, a 7-2 over Sunderland and an 8-0 thrashing of Wigan.
Pep Guardiola's Manchester City must score at a rate of 2.2 goals per game in their remaining fixtures to better Chelsea's record. A couple of heavy wins should do the trick.
