In the history of Premier League, none of the teams have managed to get 100 points in a season but by the looks of what Manchester City have been doing so far, they could well cross the 100-point mark in the Premier League.

After 29 games, Manchester City have mustered 78 points and need to win 8 out of remaining 9 games (or maybe win 7 games and draw 1).

But who have gone close to the 100-point mark? Here is a look at the 5 seasons where the title winners have amassed the most points in the history of Premier League.

#5 Arsenal, 2003-04 (90 points)

It's now 22 years since Arsene Wenger's first official game in charge of Arsenal. He might have made Arsenal 'The Invincibles' in the 2003-04 season but right now he is struggling to secure a Europa League spot. Arsenal are in a crisis situation at the moment but no one can deny the fact that in the future no team will ever come close to 'The Invincibles'.

Wenger is having a tough time at the Emirates with the fans turning on him but he will always be remembered for the 2003-04 season when his managed to remain unbeaten at the end of the season and won the league. One might wonder that Arsenal should have crossed 100 points if they were unbeaten, but drawing every third game won't help you to cross 100 points.

Arsenal played the 4-4-2 formation to good effect and had brilliant players t help them in their title cause. While Thierry Henry was the top goalscorer for Arsenal, it was Ashley Cole who was more focal part of the team. There was a telepathic understanding when Henry, Pires and Cole combined on the left-flank which helped the team to score quite a few goals.

Apart from the attack, Arsenal also had quite a sturdy defence and the presence of Patrick Vieira in the midfield. This defensive quality helped them to keep clean-sheets in 21 games.

#4 Chelsea, 2005-06 (91 points)

Jose Mourinho set the path for Chelsea's success

Mourinho's 2005-06 Chelsea side finished the league with 29 wins and four draws. They lost only five games in the season and they could have finished with more points but in the last three matches of the season, they lost two games and dropped six points after taking their foot off he gas.

During the first half of the season, Chelsea managed to win 20 games out of 22 drawing one against Everton and losing one against Manchester United. In the second half of the season, it was a bumpy ride for Mourinho as they lost four times. Even after an average second-half performance, this Chelsea side finished with 91 points.

Mourinho relied on 4-3-3 formation which gave the players a lot of options to pass the ball around the opposition penalty area.

Mourinho's setup allowed Frank Lampard to burst forward and score a lot of goals from midfield. The team were also imperious defensively as the duo of John Terry and Ricardo Carvalho played as the two centre-halves. Chelsea conceded the least number of goals that season; 22.

#3 Manchester United, 1999-00 (91 points)

Manchester United won the league by a record 18 points margin and what was remarkable about Sir Alex Ferguson's team was their consistency, a characteristic which the current Manchester United team doesn't have. This consistency resulted in a beautiful attacking football which helped them score 97 goals in that season.

While they were considered good from the defensive point of view, the main reason behind the successful season was the attacking unit. Forward Dwight Yorke scored 20 goals and finished as the top scorer for the club that year.

#2 Chelsea, 2016-17 (93 points)

Chelsea's last season could hardly have gone smoother; they won 30 games and dropped points in only eight fixtures. What is intruiging is the side started slowly until Conte changed the formation to his preferred 3-4-3 setup that saw him dominate the Serie A with Juventus.

After the change in formation, the Blues went on a 13-game winning streak that left their opponents behind. Diego Costa and Eden Hazard played a key role with the former scoring 20 league goals.

#1 Chelsea, 2004-05 (95 points)

Games Won: 29

Games Drawn: 8

Chelsea lost only one game in 2004-05 season, collecting a record 95 points. Many people put this Chelsea side above 'The Invincibles' of Arsenal.

Mourinho is always considered a pragmatic manager and it was first evident in the 2004-05 season. In the league, Chelsea managed to score 72 goals and conceded a paltry 15 as they were very hard to score against.

Then Chelsea keeper Petr Cech kept ten consecutive clean sheets in the 2004-05 season which is still a record.

Up front, Didier Drogba was pretty prolific and combined his pace, strength and finishing ability to great effect. Perhaps, the most important attacking player was Frank Lampard who made those late runs from the midfield. He scored 13 goals and was the top-scorer for the club.
