5 transfers that can turn around Chelsea's season

Arsenal v Everton - Premier League
Sanchez is expected to attract a lot of buyers come January

Chelsea being the defending champions have not even nearly replicated the form they displayed in the previous year. Although they are a formidable threat with the quality players the team possesses, It is not sufficient to match up to the standards of Manchester City or European giants like PSG, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Although the current focus should be on retaining for the Premier League (despite the fact that Manchester City are 14 points ahead and are getting better every single game), even competing in the Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup needs some quality additions to add to the consistency in performances and depth in the squad.

Here are few transfers that can help Chelsea achieve the above goals:

#1 Alexis Sanchez

Sanchez is rumoured to join the likes of Manchester City and PSG in the hunt for silverware. With a mere net expenditure of less than £5 million in the summer, Chelsea do have the financial power to compete with Man City and PSG for Sanchez.

A difference maker, a player who you can count on, a big match player is all that Chelsea need and they can find one in Alexis. The Chilean being versatile can be deployed in any system or formation. He can provide competition to the existing wingers, can be deployed as a centre-forward, a false nine, a second striker or in a number 10 role and thus can fit in both of Antonio Conte’s preferred formations i.e. 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.

Thus with the increase in depth and the quality he brings in the set pieces, Sanchez is the first pick on this list.

#2 Andrea Belotti

Torino FC v SSC Napoli - Serie A

The Chelsea forwards are great; Alvaro Morata is one of the best centre-forwards in the Premier League and Michy Batshuayi too has proven to be a good backup at times. But the issue is their inconsistency and them not being able to convert the many chances provided by the quality Chelsea midfield.

In Belotti, Chelsea will have a striker with a much better conversion rate and a strong and intelligent forward with an eye for goal. Belotti is rumoured to leave, so Chelsea should ensure they snap him up before the likes of AC Milan and Juventus move in for him.

#3 Thomas Müller

ICC Singapore - Bayern v FC Internazionale
The best poacher there is

Another player the club is rumoured to be interested in and who would be a great addition to Chelsea's attack is Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller. This World Cup winner is one of the most prolific goalscorers in the world. A striker who will immediately adapt to the high paced Premier League style and who will help bolster the club's goal tally, Muller is one of the most versatile there is.

Due to his high work rate and positioning to find the back of the net, he would easily fit into Conte’s 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 formation either as a winger, attacking midfielder or a centre-forward.

#4 Virgil van Dijk

Southampton v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League
Van Dijk is expected to leave in the winter transfer window

Considering David Luiz’s drop in form and Antonio Rudiger not reaching his full potential, van Dijk would be a good addition at the back. Chelsea were interested in the Southampton Player of the Year during the summer but the move couldn’t go through.

It is no surprise why the club were interested. Van Dijk, at 6 ft 4 in, has a towering presence and can thus intimidate forwards and be useful in the receiving end of set pieces. Plus this addition would free up Azpilicueta for wing back duties, another area that requires consistency.

#5 Alex Sandro

FC Juventus v Espanyol: Pre-Season Friendly

Another area that needs improvement is the left wing-back area. As the only left-wing backs present are Marcus Alonso and the inexperienced Kenedy, apart from a centre-forward signing, a left wing back is the top priority. The Blues should reignite their interest in Alex Sandro.

Primarily a wing-back the Brazilian is capable of playing anywhere along the left flank. Along with his defensive contribution, his acceleration, ability to beat players one-on-one, and a brilliant final delivery make him one of the top fullbacks in the world.
