Substantial things were expected from Andriy Shevchenko after the Ukrainian striker made a £39.49m move to Chelsea from AC Milan, a transfer fee that broke the then record for the highest fee paid by an English football club.

Shevchenko made his debut with the club in the Community Shield game vs Liverpool where the Ukrainian scored the only goal in his side's 2-1 defeat to the Reds. Shevchenko struggled to acclimatize to a physical mode of play in English football and it quickly became clear that the 29-year-old was way past his supreme as he managed only 8 goals thereafter throughout his 3-year stint.

His £121,000-a-week remuneration made him the highest earner in the squad but he couldn't even manage to get into double figures in terms of goals in his three years at the club. Despite his poor performances Andriy managed 76 games at the club and finally was loaned back to Milan in 2008.

Shevchenko returned back to Chelsea for one remaining year in his contract but he soon left for his former Ukranian Premier League club Dynamo Kyiv and was named the League's best player the same year. Pretty crazy, right?
