Adrian Mutu was by far the most controversial player signing in the history of Chelsea when he arrived from Parma for a fee of £17.10m. The Romanian had a pretty decent start at the Stamford Bridge but soon his form dipped predominantly due to lack of chances.

Gianfranco Zola left Chelsea to be succeeded by Mutu but he couldn't reproduce the brilliance shown by his forerunner due to a breakdown in relationship with the then manager Jose Mourinho.

It got worse when in September 2004 he failed a drugs test for cocaine and was subsequently released in October by the Blues. The FA gave him a seven-month ban and a £20,000 fine.

Ten years of legal proceedings followed as Chelsea sued their former player for a contravention of his contract. However, Mutu got back to his best after departing Chelsea playing for the likes of Juventus and Fiorentina where he played a total of 145 matches and banged in 61 goals.

It was ultimately sad that off-field intrusions ended his hopes of showing his quality in the Premier League and went on to become one of the worst signings for Chelsea.
