5 of the worst Premier League summer signings of the season

Chelsea v Swansea City - Premier League
Sanches has been a disappointment

The managers and the fans often look forward to the summer transfer window as it provides them with the chance to bolster the squad and inject fresh optimism for the ten months that follow.

Despite the escalating prices, the agent fees, the payment to intermediaries et al, there has been no shortage of signings, particularly in the Premier League. It is always down to the manager to get the best out of his players and help them settle at the new club.

In most cases, the player takes the pressure by the scruff of the neck and continues to perform at the levels he is capable of. However, there are times when certain players need to be eased into the ferocity and physicality of the Premier League, that they take their own time to settle in.

So we look at 5 new signings who have failed to adjust to life in England and have been misfiring all season.

#5 Victor Lindelof (Manchester United)

Huddersfield Town v Manchester United - The Emirates FA Cup Fifth Round
Lindelof needs to adapt fast!

Given Jose Mourinho's love for tough, brawny and established defenders, it came quite a surprise to many when he decided to sign Victor Lindelof for £31.5 million. The 23-year-old arrived in England and has failed to adjust to the intensity of the Premier League so far.

He is a ball playing defender who is good with his feet and was supposed to be a perfect partner to the rough-and-tough Eric Bailly. However, that has not been the case and the Swede has often come under heavy criticism for rookie mistakes, which has often lead to goals.

Bailly himself has been out with injury for three months and he was often paired with Chris Smalling, who is susceptible to mistakes himself. All this has stalled Lindelof's progress and as a result, Mourinho is likely to buy another central defender this summer.

Despite all of this, he is showing signs of improvement and has made a decent 25 appearances for the club in all competitions. He also has a remarkable record of not tasting defeat whenever he has started in the league. Perhaps, he needs a bit more time to showcase his full potential but at the moment, he has failed to live up to expectations.

#4 Davy Klaassen (Everton)

Everton v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League
Klaassen playing for Everton

Everton had just sold Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United for a reported £75 million and just like Spurs, following Gareth Bale's transfer, they had a bountiful amount to spend on transfers. Klaassen was signed form Ajax for £24.30 and was supposed to be their prime creator.

The 25-year-old has been performing very well at Ajax and was crucial in their Europa League campaign last year. In 6 years at Ajax, he made 181 appearances and scored 55 goals. He also has 16 caps to his name for the Netherlands national team and was also voted as Dutch Footballer of the Year in 2016.

The main problem he faced at Everton was that they also bought Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney, two players who play a similar role. Unfortunately for him, the other two are more experienced and also has been plying their trade in England for a long time. Thus, Klaassen was overlooked many a time.

He has played only 6 minutes in the league since September which is saddening to say the least, considering his calibre. Klaassen will be looking for a move away if things remain the same this summer.

#3 Jairo Riedewald (Crystal Palace)

Crystal Palace v Manchester City - Premier League
Riedewald has failed to show the spark

The young defender was a shining spark in Ajax's campaign in the 2016-17 season. Capable of playing at centre-back, left-back or as a central midfielder, he is yet another prospect who graduated from Ajax's famed academy.

He spent four years at the Dutch club, making 93 appearances in all competitions before Frank de Boer signed him for Crystal Palace last summer for a reported £8.10 million. Since then, his career has been a downward spiral.

He started the first league game of the season for Palace, which ended in a 3-0 loss at home to newly-promoted Huddersfield Town. Palace, themselves, had a terrible start to the season and de Boer was sacked 10 weeks later.

Riedewald has started only 3 games since and has played only 684 minutes in all competitions. Palace are currently 17th in the league table and fighting for survival. The 21-year-old is unlikely to stay at the club for a long time and will be hoping for a move away to resurrect his career.

#2 Renato Sanches (Swansea City)

Swansea City v Tottenham Hotspur - Premier League
Sanches has been terrible

One of those players dubbed to be the "next-big-thing" by many, Renato Sanches has been a disappointment all season. Following the arrival of James Rodriguez and Corentin Tolisso, Bayern Munich decided to loan the youngster to Swansea City for a year. They hoped that he can gain some playing time and return a better player, but things have been the exact opposite.

He won the 2016 Golden Boy award and his exploits at Benfica caught the eye of Bayern who splashed out £31.50 million for the youngster. In his debut season, he played 25 times for the German club in all competitions. He was also called up to the Portugal national team was part of the team that won the EURO 2016.

It looked as if Swansea was making a statement when they roped him in but the 20-year-old has failed to find his feet in England. He has played only 12 games in the league and has failed to register a goal or an assist. He has also been struggling with injuries which has added to his downfall.

He will return to Germany at the end of the season and will be determined to set the record straight because everyone knows the immense potential he has within him.

#1 Tiemoue Bakayoko (Chelsea)

Chelsea v AFC Bournemouth - Carabao Cup Quarter-Final
Bakayoko has been below average

There were question marks over Conte's decision to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United last summer. The player has been a vital cog at the heart of Chelsea's team and was pivotal to their successes. Perhaps those criticisms would've been put to bed had he found a proper replacement but the player he bought in, Tiemoue Bakayoko, has been anything but that.

He shot into fame with Monaco last season when he produced good performances on a regular basis which saw them lift the league title and reach the semi-finals of the Champions League. He was subsequently bought by Chelsea for £36 million last summer to fill Matic's void.

But, a string of uninspiring and mediocre performances from the Frenchman has not helped the team and has not gone down well with the fans as well. He has been largely at odds with the entire team and prone to rudimentary mistakes.

Despite all of this, he has still managed to play 37 games in all competitions, but that has largely been down to Chelsea's lack of options in midfield. Still 23 years old, he has enough time to turn his career around and will be hoping to do so soon, or his time may be over in England.
