Aaron Ramsey: Road to Redemption

Aaron Ramsey

A year can change so much, at one point an outcast, a liability, a young prodigy incapable of fulfilling his vast potential. It never helps, to have a career hampering injury at 19.

Devoid of confidence, lacking a clear cut first team role and to have the clubs fans out for your head. Still only 21, Aaron Ramsey’s short career seemed to have stalled. Made to play out on the right, he drifted in and out of games. His touch lacked that finesse, his passing seemed to lack that purpose, and he seemed half the player he was before his unfortunate leg break.

Ramsey was going to turn his fortunes around. It started with a new contract, last December that signaled the faith Arsene Wenger still had in his young Welshman. The tie against West Ham at the Emirates in January seemed to be the spark that ignited his season. Confident displays, tireless running, and his willingness to perform for the team, led him to be voted as Arsenal player of the month for April and arguably the standout performer for the club during the 2nd half of the season, alongside Laurent Koscielny. The fans started to back him. This was Aaron Ramsey’s road to redemption.

Things were looking up as the new season was approaching; Ramsey was once again the standout performer during Arsenals pre-season tour of Asia and seemed destined to have an excellent season. Much like the rest of the team, he was lackluster during Arsenals opening day defeat to Aston Villa. He gave the team a much needed lift, during the champion’s league qualifier where Arsenal played Fenerbahçe.

Since then, both in the Premier League and Champions League he has been Arsenals most important player. Once compared to Steven Gerrard, for his tireless engine, and his runs from deep, he has added goals to his game and is Arsenals leading goal scorer in all competition with 8 goals from midfield. Aaron Ramsey has risen from the abyss and though he isn’t Steven Gerrard by any stretch, he is getting there faster than we thought.
