Since Carlo Ancelotti departed the San Siro in 2009, much has changed. The Rossoneri have suffered a remarkable fall from grace. AC Milan considered traditional giants on both the Italian and European stage has won just one Serie A title since then in 2011 under now Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri. He was sacked in 2014 and after Allegri, seven coaches have been axed.
AC Milan has even struggled to qualify for the Champions League of late and for a club of Milan’s stature, anything less than competing in the Champions League is seen as a failure.
Current Rossoneri boss Gennaro Gattuso is under intense pressure and seems to be on borrowed time. With the club languishing in fifth place in Serie A, the owners are considering sacking Gattuso.
Jose Mourinho who is currently out of work is being touted as a potential replacement for Gattuso.
Even though Mourinho’s standing has taken a major hit after being sacked by Manchester United, his resume is extraordinary with league titles in England, Italy, Spain, and Portugal, as well as two UEFA Champions League titles.
San Siro bosses have been alerted to Mourinho’s imminent availability and have joined the chase less than a fortnight after Mourinho’s dismissal.
Whether Mourinho fancies a return to Italy remains to be seen. During his spell in Italy at Inter, the Portuguese completed an incredible Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Champions League treble in the 2009-2010 season.
Of course, Mourinho's history with cross-town rivals could really put a spanner in the works. But in football, you should never say never.
Ac Milan has toiled seven years without a trophy and the new owners view Mourinho as the spark needed to ignite the flames of glory for the Rossoneri. The Portuguese manager will certainly guarantee trophies.
Mourinho has proven successful in Serie A before and if anyone can end Juventus’s Scudetto reign, it is Jose Mourinho.
What Milan need is someone who can rebuild the club and Mourinho might just be the ideal candidate- who is incidentally searching for a fresh challenge to rebuild his reputation.
