AC Milan enter the race for Liverpool target Piotr Zielinski
AC Milan have joined the race for Empoli midfield talent Piotr Zielinski according to Sky Italia. Vincenzo Montella was just announced as head coach of the illustrious Italian club, and he seems to have wasted no time in outlining his targets for the transfer market.
The Rossoneri’s midfield clearly needs to be reinvigorated and Montella has named Zielinski as one of his primary targets. The 22-year-old Polish international has been on the radar of several clubs for his impressive season with Empoli in the Serie A. He hasn’t been able to make much of an impression at the ongoing European Championships but remains a widely sought after talent.
Liverpool were reported to be close to sealing his transfer after their much-revered manager Jurgen Klopp spoke to Zielinski personally and assured him of a crucial role in his Liverpool setup. It seems clear the former Dortmund manager holds the Empoli star in high regard, but the Anfield club seem to be taking too long to wrap up the transfer.
Napoli have also been pursuing the midfielder for a while, and are already waiting in the wings, having already agreed terms with Udinese, the club that still own the player. Maurizio Sarri has been very keen on signing Zielinski, having already worked with him last year at Empoli.
Meanwhile, Montella has also named Fernando, the Sampdoria midfielder and Adem Ljajic (currently owned by Roma) as players he would like the Milan management to pursue. Both the aforementioned players were close to sealing transfers to other clubs and it isn’t clear if the 7 time European Champions will be able to move quickly enough to stop their moves from going through.
Milan have however already sealed a coup by signing Serie B star Gianluca Lapadula, beating clubs of the stature of Juventus, Napoli and Tottenham in the process. So if they move quickly enough and convince the player, they could seal Zielinski’s signing too.
